The Next Disaster: Bush's Iran Policy (Bile is not enough)
RealClearPolitics ^ | February 01, 2007 | "Crazy" Joe Conason

Whatever George W. Bush may tell us about his intentions toward Iran, every action and order indicates that he will seek to expand the war eastward from Iraq. Despite the warnings voiced by wiser military and diplomatic advisers, the president still seems to be listening to the same discredited neoconservatives whose fantasies and falsehoods drove us into the Iraqi quagmire.

If their plotting succeeds in provoking military conflict with Iran, the resulting carnage could indeed make Iraq look like a "cakewalk," to quote one of the more stupid predictions that preceded the current war.

Imagine firefights erupting along the Persian Gulf and violent uprisings among the Shia masses in the Baghdad slums and southern Iraq -- and then imagine the entire region convulsed by ethnic and religious conflict. The potential consequences could be catastrophic, from the closing of the Gulf straits and a new oil crisis to ruptured political alliances and terrible American casualties.

Yet regardless of these risks, the Bush administration's urge to provoke Iran is as unmistakable as its preparations for a wider war. Nearly every day, the White House sends obvious signals of belligerence to Tehran, with the same drumbeat heard during the months that led up to the invasion of Iraq.

I keep mentioning here, the dems went ballistic about PROTECTING Iran and Syria as soon as we went after Iraq. It was all Richard Clarke and Biden could talk about.

It went so far as Biden and Clarke saying the only good thing to come from the "failed policy in Iraq" is that our military will be defeated and demoralized and we will "not dare" threaten Syria and Iran.

Sick stuff, but as usual republicans act defensive rather than calling them out for fronting for our worst enemies.

I'm all for spanking the manure out of Iran .... as I was for the same in Iraq ... but for crying out loud

Can't we put someone else in charge of kicking their arses?

Bush can't even pronounce "Amajenad" ... he's proven he can't negotiate a real war, which is what we'll get when we attack Iran ......can you imagine how that press conference will go?

I miss Ronald Reagan.

I heard CNN's John Roberts on the radio yesterday discussing the information coming out of Iran. He basically accused the Bush Administration of skewing intelligence from Iraq concerning Iran's involvement in the Karbala raid and IED manufacturing. He also circled around the idea that the U.S. was flooding the Perisan Gulf with naval forces in the hopes Iran would react and generate a Middle Eastern-style Gulf of Tonkin incident.

I miss Ronald Reagan.

So do I....for many reasons. However, we have to remember he left Lebanon after the Marine barracks bombing by Iran proxy Hezbollah. Action at that time would have saved us a lot of trouble now.

The Dems will side with the enemy once to often, and the repercussions will be huge...This writer hates Bush beyond all reason. Not worth the time to read...

This saber rattling toward Iran is designed to inspire the Iranians to have their own regime change. We know they're close, but our threats have to be credible to work.

Go after IRAN is exactly what would should be doing...should have done it on September 12, 2001. They have been attacking and killing Americans for many many years.

A real War with IRAN....let face it people if we took the gloves off and used our armed forces correctly we can make IRAN look like IRAQ circa 1991 in about 2 months.

The whole problem is the American public who have life so good that they dont have the time for some sacrifice and dont really care...a great majority of the new immigrants to this country....are only takers and do not have anything invested in this country...they want the US $$ and benefits but their loyalty is elsewhere.

Pulling out of Iraq is no going to happen...what we need is a mass troop deployment to the Iranian border....let the sunni and shia kill each other for awhile ...they seem good at it. Tell Iran in no uncertain terms that f 16's and bombers will be all over them for months if they so much as sneeze......Extreme and cruel force is the only thing they understand.....ask an iraqi soldier from 1991.

I'm for one step further ..... build a big fence around the middle east and let them all fight it out. Go cut a hole in it in 20 years and deal with who survives.

...he's proven he can't negotiate a real war...

If by negotiate, you mean that he can't get ALL of the terrorists done away & killed off & shut-out, well, it's only a matter of time--and LOTS of it--to get a real strong handle on:

1. Where the guerillas are coming from
2. How & where they are getting their weapons
3. How to stop & deny them from obtaining & using those weapons & themselves.

But know this: Our President is Utterly-Determined to win, for the Honor of the USA, the Commonwealth of Iraq, the Security of the Middle East (including our foreign policies with them) and for the Armed Forces who have suffered so much.
