Eritrea warns of "consequences" for U.S. in Somalia

Eritrea warned the United States on Friday that its involvement in Somalia would "incur dangerous consequences" following a U.S. air strike in the Horn of Africa nation targeting al Qaeda suspects.

Eritrea has in a matter of years gone from being a U.S. ally to one of its staunchest opponents, analysts say, because of what Asmara perceives as Washington's support for rival Ethiopia in a long-standing border dispute.

"President Isaias Afwerki underlined that the turmoil being created in ... Somalia by the U.S. administration through its mercenary agent (Ethiopia) would incur dangerous consequences," a statement on the Information Ministry Web site said.

A senior U.S. official said Monday's air strike on Somalia killed up to 10 al Qaeda-affiliated "terrorists", but three of the most wanted suspects survived in the first overt U.S. military action since a peacekeeping mission ended in 1994.

The Eritrean government recently accused Washington of being behind the war in Somalia where the interim government backed by Ethiopia routed the once-powerful Islamists in a two-week war.

Asmara has repeatedly denied Ethiopian allegations it sent thousands of Eritrean soldiers to fight alongside the Islamists. Western nations have accused Eritrea of using Somalia as a proxy battleground against neighbour Ethiopia.

The Horn of African countries fought a 1998-2000 border war, which killed an estimated 70,000 people.

The Eritrean Information Ministry statement said Isaias called on the international community to take "serious measures without underestimating the existing dangerous situation".

The U.S. attack was criticised by the United Nations, many European countries and the Arab League.

The United States called on Friday for the speedy deployment of African peacekeepers to Somalia to stop what it called a security vacuum that could trigger fresh fighting.

Ethiopia, Washington's major counter-terrorism ally in the Horn of Africa, has said it would keep its troops in Somalia for a few weeks to help Somalia's interim government in what is the 14th attempt to restore central rule in the country since dictator Mohamed Siad Barre was toppled in 1991.

What an idiot. He'll be lucky if Ethiopia doesn;t decide its on a role and take him out too. Can't wait to see the Ethiopians at the Liturgy tomorrow and get the latest from their old country.

All Three are corrupt conglomerations that seek the decline of American prosperity and power. Why dose anyone with a neuron and a half give them any credence in this country? As for Eritrea, put up or shut up.

Yet another warning …

Seems like we get these warnings every other day.

If we could bring a few of these ashats over to our country, let them see the hugh industrial/military complex that they are up against, perhaps they would revise their constant bravado about how they will whip us.

What is this ashat, or asshat? I've heard that only within the past five years, but I don't know what it means, or implies.

I never could quite see the rosy pictures of the time that portrayed the Eritreans as heroes. Granted that Ethiopia was unfortunately taken over by a Marxist tyrant, Haile Mengistu Mariam, but Eritrea was never the wonderful band of brothers that the American press portrayed at the time.

I'm thinking of books like this one by Thomas Kenneally, the author of Schindler's list:

I once met Kenneally and had lunch with him, not long after this book came out. He seemed like a nice guy, but hopelessly naive.

I think I spotted the flaw in this article:

"Eritrea warned the United States on Friday..."

To be more specific:

A person, of either gender, whose behavior displays such ignorance/obnoxiousness that you would like to make them wear their own ass as a hat.

Head up ass type of image.

How do you figure that would help? The Palestiniacs are QED that it wouldn't matter one iota. Second QED would be those opposing forces of U.S. military might in Iraq. Are those opposing forces better or worse off, in general, than Eritrea?

I had to google Eritrea. Its a tiny country that has been at war with its neighbor, Ethiopia for 30 years, and also has continual skirmishes (artillery exchanges) with its other neighbor, Sudan.
It has 9 ethnic groups, two religions: islam and christianity, and three working languages (english is one of them).

Its a tiny little country and its littered with fields of undiscovered landmines from nearly 60 years of war.

Amazingly its supposed to be a democracy, but its president declare martial law years ago...so its classified by those who know as a military dictatorship.

I'd like to see shred of evidence that Eritrea has ever had a close or significant relationship with the US.

This is typical unsubtantiated media sping against the US.
