SOUTHEAST Asia's most wanted terrorist, Bali bomb mastermind Dulmatin, has been wounded in a fierce gunfight on remote Jolo Island in a significant win for US-backed Philippines forces battling to "eliminate" the Jemaah Islamiah kingpin and his Abu Sayyaf cronies.
The Australian, in a series of interviews with the top Philippines and US commanders in the southern Philippines, has also learned that Dulmatin, along with his JI Bali bomber partner Patek, are on the run for their lives on Jolo. The pair spend no longer than six hours in one place on the jungle-covered volcanic island.
According to Philippines Brigadier-General Ruben Rafael, they have even resorted to sporting wigs and burkas to evade 6000 troops hunting them.
Dulmatin, who has a $US10million ($13 million) bounty on his head, has hidden two of his children away on the nearby island of Basilan, probably with the widow of Abu Sayyaf founder Abburajak Janjalani, one commander said.

Week-long ICE operation targeting criminal aliens and illegal alien fugitives in the Southland nets record arrests
Subjects include 2 foreign murder suspects and more than 150 immigration fugitives
LOS ANGELES – More than 750 foreign nationals have been removed from the United States or are facing deportation following a massive week-long enforcement action by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) targeting criminal aliens and immigration fugitives in five Southland counties that concluded earlier today.
During the operation, ICE officers tracked down and arrested 338 immigration violators who were at large in Los Angeles (169), Orange (111), Riverside (26), San Bernardino (22), and Ventura (10) counties. More than 150 of those arrested were immigration fugitives, aliens who have ignored final orders of deportation issued by immigration judges. Another 24 of those encountered were aliens who had been previously deported and returned to the United States illegally.
The group also included two criminal fugitives from Mexico wanted for murdering a Sinaloa man in 2004 in a dispute over a fence. Rafael Lopez Obeso, 54, and his son, Rafael Obeso Melchor, 25, were taken into custody by ICE officers Friday at a residence in the desert community of Mecca. The men, who were arrested on immigration violations, were transported to the border Friday and turned over to representatives from the Mexican Attorney General’s Office. Members of the U.S. Marshals Service Pacific Southwest Regional Fugitive Task Force assisted in the arrest.
As part of the operation, ICE officers also expanded their search for criminal aliens incarcerated in area jails, taking custody of 423 previously unidentified deportable foreign nationals who were scheduled for release from the county jails in Los Angeles, Orange, Riverside, San Bernardino, and Ventura counties.
The seven-day effort is the largest single enforcement action carried out nationwide so far under Operation Return to Sender, an ongoing ICE initiative targeting criminal aliens, foreign nationals with final orders of deportation, and other immigration violators. Since its launch in June 2006, Operation Return to Sender has resulted in more than 13,000 arrests nationwide. During that same time period, ICE has also lodged nearly 3,000 immigration detainers against criminal aliens incarcerated in state and local jails across the country ensuring they will come into ICE custody when they complete their sentences.
“As part of our commitment to the Secure Border Initiative, ICE is dedicating unprecedented resources to identifying and arresting criminal aliens and immigration fugitives,” said Department of Homeland Security Assistant Secretary for ICE Julie L. Myers. “This country welcomes law abiding immigrants, but foreign nationals who flout our laws and commit crimes against our citizens should be on notice that there are consequences for their conduct.”
The United States Attorney’s Office is reviewing the cases of a number of the aliens arrested during the past week for possible prosecution for re-entry after deportation, a felony violation that carries a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison. Federal charges were filed last week against Erik Omar Galindo-Vasquez, a 28-year-old Mexican national with a prior conviction for assault with a deadly weapon who was previously deported from the United States in 2005.
“The goal of our enforcement efforts is two-fold. First, it’s about restoring integrity to our nation’s immigration system,” said Jim Hayes, the field office director for ICE detention and removal operations in Los Angeles. “Second, it’s about safeguarding our communities from those who brazenly disregard our laws and often prey upon other members of the immigrant community.”
This week’s operation was conducted by officers assigned to ICE’s four Los Angeles area fugitive operations teams. Those officers were aided by three additional fugitive operations teams brought in from ICE offices across the country. The Fugitive Operations Program was established in 2003 to eliminate the nation’s backlog of immigration fugitives. Today, there are 52 fugitive operations teams nationwide and ICE expects to expand that number to 75 by year’s end.
The majority of the aliens taken into custody during the last week are Mexican nationals, but the group also included immigration violators from 14 countries, including the Ukraine, India, Japan, Poland, and Trinidad. Since many of these individuals have already been through immigration proceedings, they are subject to immediate removal from the country. Of the 757 aliens arrested during the past week, more than 450 have already been returned to their native countries. The remaining aliens are in ICE custody awaiting a hearing before an immigration judge.
Operation Return to Sender is an integral part of the second phase of the Secure Border Initiative (SBI), a comprehensive multi-year plan launched by the Department of Homeland Security to secure America's borders and reduce illegal migration. Under SBI, Homeland Security seeks to gain operational control of both the northern and southern borders, while re-engineering the detention and removal system to ensure that illegal aliens are removed from the country quickly and efficiently. The initiative also involves strong interior enforcement efforts, including enhanced worksite enforcement, and intensified efforts to track down and remove illegal aliens inside this country.
Last fiscal year, ICE removed more than 190,000 aliens from the United States, including more than 86,000 criminal aliens.

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "AMMAN, Jordan — A father shot dead his 17-year-old daughter, having suspected her of having sex, and surrendered to the police in the latest case of the so-called "honor killings" that have brought international opprobrium on Jordan. An autopsy found the girl to be a virgin.
Weeks earlier the girl had returned home from a family protection clinic after doctors had vouched for virginity and the father had signed a pledge not to harm her, a state forensic pathologist said Thursday.
The father shot her four times in the head on Tuesday, said the pathologist, who spoke on condition of anonymity owing to the sensitivity of the issue.
On Wednesday, an autopsy performed at the National Institute of Forensic Medicine in Amman showed "she was still a virgin," the pathologist added."

WASHINGTON, Jan. 25, 2007 – In a string of operations across Iraq over the past four days, Iraqi and coalition forces detained 43 suspected terrorists, found several weapons caches, stopped an illegal checkpoint, and freed three captives, military officials reported.
-- In Karmah, Iraq, coalition forces detained 12 suspected terrorists today. Intelligence reports indicate the detainees have key logistical ties to the al Qaeda in Iraq network and to improvised explosive device production. Reports indicate that they are responsible for the recent increase in IED attacks in the Karmah area. During the raid, coalition forces found several AK-47s and ammunition.
-- In Mosul, coalition forces captured a foreign fighter facilitator with ties to a senior al Qaeda leader responsible for bringing large numbers of suicide bombers into Iraq.
-- Special Iraqi police forces captured five members of an illegally armed militia and detained seven others during operations with coalition advisors yesterday near Kawam, south of Baghdad. The suspects are allegedly responsible for coordinating and carrying out numerous IED and other attacks against Iraqi police, Iraqi security forces and coalition forces in the Babil province.
-- A tip from a local citizen to an Iraqi army unit enabled soldiers to stop an illegal checkpoint in the western Baghdad neighborhood of Ghazaliyah yesterday. Shortly after noon, an unidentified Iraqi phoned Company C, 4th Battalion, 1st Brigade, 6th Iraqi Army Division, stating that a number of men had set up an illegal checkpoint in a southern Ghazaliyah neighborhood. A patrol was dispatched to the area and upon arrival was engaged by AK-47 and pistol fire. The patrol returned fire but was unable to prevent the escape of the terrorists.
-- Coalition and Iraqi army soldiers detained 10 suspects and seized four caches in the Al-Doura district as part of Operation Wolverine Feast yesterday. The operation began as witnesses reported seeing several men load a mortar tube and ammunition into the trunk of a car. Soldiers of the 10th Mountain Division's Company C, 1st Squadron, 89th Cavalry Regiment, and 3rd Battalion, 4th Brigade, 6th Iraqi Army Division, were alerted and cordoned off the target area. In the first objective they captured one wanted man with an 82 mm mortar system, two AK-47 assault rifles, a 9 mm pistol and two hand grenades. A sweep of a second targeted area uncovered six men with 10 120 mm mortar rounds. The third cache contained a 60 mm mortar system and various rocket-propelled grenade launchers and RPG rounds. Three men were detained at this location. The last cache contained several RPG rockets and accelerators.
-- Coalition forces detained three suspected terrorists and found weapons during a combat operation in Mahmudiyah Jan. 23. Soldiers of the 10th Mountain Division's 2nd Battalion, 15th Field Artillery Regiment, worked with troops from the 2nd Battalion, 4th Brigade, 6th Iraqi Army Division, during Operation Black Eagle II, aimed at denying insurgents sanctuary within the Mahmudiyah area. Two AK-47 bandoleers and two Katusha rocket casings were found during the operation.
-- Four suspected insurgents were detained after a raid on a suspected insurgent safe house south of Baghdad Jan. 23. Iraqi army troops and paratroopers from the 25th Infantry Division's 1st Squadron, 40th Cavalry Regiment, conducted the raid on the suspected terrorist safe house, which was believed to be used to hide insurgents and store weapons.
-- Coalition forces and Iraq army troops detained eight suspected terrorists and seized weapons during a combat patrol northwest of Lutifiyah Jan. 23. Soldiers of the 10th Mountain Division's 2nd Battalion, 15th Field Artillery Regiment, and the 6th Iraqi Army Division's 1st Battalion, 4th Brigade, were on a combat patrol when they came under small-arms fire attack from a canal. The troops called in for aviation support, and one insurgent died in the aerial attack. The remaining four insurgents tried to escape down a canal and were killed by Iraqi troops. Following the firefight, troops searched the area for more insurgents. They found nine Iraqis hiding in a nearby house. Eight of the nine were detained, all wanted for suspected terrorist acts. The search also turned up a weapons cache consisting of three medium machine guns, two AK-47 assault rifles, a shotgun and a sniper rifle with a scope.
-- Coalition forces discovered a building with blood-stained walls southeast of Fallujah on Jan. 22 and rescued three Iraqis found shackled inside. One of the victims was badly beaten and had broken limbs. He was examined and quickly evacuated by coalition forces to receive life-saving medical care. During their patrol, soldiers of Company B, 2nd Battalion, 136th Infantry Regiment, discovered multiple weapons caches in other nearby houses. The discovery included a mortar targeting system and a sniper rifle with scope, as well as a Bongo truck with a mounted anti-aircraft gun and another vehicle rigged as a car bomb. Once the hostages were rescued from the house, the suspected "torture house" was destroyed by coalition forces.

Sarajevo- Management of the Mittal Steel Company in the central Bosnian town of Zenica refused late Wednesday to unload a freight car of scrap iron from Romania, which had high levels of radiation, media reported Thursday. The company's sensors, according to reports, found radioactive traces in scrap iron in one freight car of a huge load of the material imported from Romania through the Schulz Company for Mittal Steel in Zenica, 70 kilometres north of Sarajevo.
The car was immediately isolated and the supplier was informed about the findings. The radiation level, according to unofficial sources, was five times higher than the limit.

Army forces arrested twenty-eight wanted terrorists Wednesday night in the Judea and Samaria regions.
Soldiers arrested one terrorist from Hamas and eleven from the Islamic Jihad in the Hebron region. In Bethlehem they arrested three terrorists from the Islamic Jihad, three from the People’s Front, one from Hamas, and three from Fatah’s Tanzim.
In Ramallah, the army arrested four terrorist from Hamas. In Samaria two terrorists were arrested, one from Fatah and one from the Islamic Jihad. The two were arrested in the Shechem and Jenin regions respectively.

NEW DELHI: A suspected Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) militant was arrested with 2.5 kg of RDX by the Special Cell of the Delhi police from near the Seelampur Metro station on Thursday. The militant was to hand over the explosives to an LeT module that was to carry out blasts here on Republic Day. A hunt has been launched for the other militants.

Manila- Philippine troops have seized a huge explosives' and ammunition cache from what was allegedly the biggest weapons' depot of communist rebels in the country's troubled south, an army spokesman said Thursday. Major Ernesto Torres said the soldiers found the depot in a cave in Tagbina town in Surigao del Sur province, 930 kilometres south of Manila, after a brief firefight with guerrillas on Wednesday.
He said the cave was "believed to be the biggest bomb-making and ammunition depot of communist terrorists" in the southern region of Mindanao.
"Troops recovered several bomb-making and ammunition reloading equipment including 42 plastic containers of superdyne dynamite explosives that could produce about 250 pieces of 8-kilogram landmines," he said.
Soldiers also seized 18 claymore mines, assorted assault rifles, rocket-propelled grenade launchers, ammunition and detonating wires. "Due to thick foliage, about 100 plastic containers of superdyne explosives buried within the vicinity of the cave are still to be dug," Torres said.
Military authorities were hopeful that the capture of the weapons depot would degrade the rebels' ability to launch bomb attacks in Mindanao, which often target soldiers, communication facilities and business establishments that refuse to pay revolutionary taxes. Communist rebels have been fighting the government since the late 1960s, making the movement of the longest-running leftist insurgencies in Asia. They have been tagged as terrorists by foreign governments, such as the United States and the European Union.
