...a laptop computer containing information about nuclear materials and cyanide. .. a dog caught the scent of narcotics on cash he was carrying,
... he said he had $18,000, authorities said. But when agents checked his luggage, they found an additional $59,000.

Although it's completely illegal, authorities routinely arrest anyone with over 10,000 in cash and take the money.
Welcome to the fascist states of America!

Let's see now. He starts in Amsterdam, a well known hotbed for drugs, to Nigeria, a well known hotbed of corruption, to Detroit, where sniffer dogs detect drug residue in a suitcase stuffed with cash. It doesn't take a Sherlock Holmes to deduce what this guy was up to.
I bet if he had made it home to Dallas the next step would have been to launder the money and he would have been home free.
To: elc
Money itself has an odor, a distinct smell (cue Monty Python's "Money"). The dog can be trained to alert on merely money, and the human handlers later claim it was the smell of narcotics. They can jack anyone up for carrying detectable amounts of money using narcotics as an excuse.
This perp's troubles started when he lied about how much cash he had. Had he declared it, they'd have to let him go.
He can't be prosecuted for the information he was carrying- if none of it is classified, you can have any information you want. It's included in the article to help justify searching him in the first place.
If I got caught with money, a manual on electroplating, instructions for installing electroplated cyclone fences, and advice on cracking rocks in fence post holes, the article would mention cyanide, information on perimeter security devices used at military bases, and explosives.

Interesting that he retained a lawyer - in Michigan - named Leroy T. Soles. The same lawyer that defended 4 members of a terror cell infiltrating the Detroit Metro Airport and plotting attacks on the US, Jordan and Turkey.

Or, his defense of one of the 5 men in Dearborn, Michigan who fraudulently obtained trucking licenses and were going to be hauling dangerous explosive chemicals.

Why choose this lawyer? I see no indication this man has ties to Michigan...
