About our October snow storm which broke all records for early snow in Western New York:

The first warning last Thursday was the sound of what we thought were gun shots coming from all directions around us. Then the walloping thumps of trees hitting the ground. Then the electricity went off (and stayed off for six days). I stayed up all night because the electric line in our backyard was hit by several large branches, and if it snapped it could have set fire to the house.

380 THOUSAND houses were w/o electricity. There are still about 75,000 without it.

By Sunday, we were running out of logs for our little wood burner, and frankly, I was getting scared. We scoured the basement for any unused word and burned that. We couldn't get the car out because a large log was blocking the driveway. But a neighbor came over to borrow an extension cord and saw how cold it was here. About ten minutes later, he sent over a whole box of logs, and a box of tinder. Then another neighbor got to a store and got us a box of those wonderful fake logs and next morning still another neighbor delivered another box. And they did it all without our asking. Are we incredibly fortunate to have such neighbors, or what?

Today our yard was filled with men who came all the way from West Virginia, the Allegheny Power Co., and they TURNED THE LIGHTS BACK ON! And that means heat. And you can actually flip a switch on the wall, and the room lights up ! And the furnace comes on. I can hardly believe in this miracle of electricity.

LOL! I just heard a local radio announcer ask if anyone's standing around for ten hours flipping a light switch on and off just because you can.

I'm praying for the people who are still w/o power and may be until next Sunday.

Oh, and on another note, the mayor of Buffalo, through one of his henchmen, is playing politics and blaming FEMA for not getting here soon enough. Heard that somewhere before? But our County Exec says FEMA was here from the beginning and have done a lot to help. Oh, and the national guard is here, too.

Holy Moly, kitkat! I thought you might be out of power, but I didn't know you were literally trapped in a cold home! Yikes!

During our ice storm last year we had no heat or light, but at least we could get in the car and drive to areas that had their power restored so we could warm up!

Thanking the Lord for taking care of you, friend. I really was getting worried about you!

(And LOL! about turning the lights on and off just because you can!)

And you wrote some time ago that you wanted a wood stove for emergncies like this. Good thing you had it ready. It would have been a lot more uncomfortable for you if you had not had it ready. What a storm!

Kit, I had no idea ... I'm glad you're okay.
