That doesn't compute with me. He covets the spotlight. I don't remember seeing him with so much white hair. Maybe his conscience has him stressed ................ (meoww ;).

It computes with me because he has been so much at odds with W that I could see him not wanting to have his picture taken on the platform. But I know not the facts, and offer only conjecture.

President Bush's Statement on Passing of Buck O'Neil

President Bush: Buck O'Neil represented the best of America's national pastime. He devoted his long and full life to baseball, and refused to allow injustice and discrimination to diminish his love of the game and his joyous, generous spirit.

Laura and I extend our sympathies to his family and friends, and on behalf of all Americans we give thanks for the life of one of the great ambassadors in baseball history.

John Jordan “Buck” O’Neil
November 13, 1911 ~ October 6, 2006

Excerpt from the Chicago Tribune

A solid-hitting first baseman, O'Neil barnstormed with pitching legend Satchel Paige during his youth and twice won a Negro leagues batting title. He later became a pennant-winning manager of the Kansas City Monarchs.

O'Neil, who died Friday night at 94, drew on his association with the old Negro leagues to become a scout and a coach for the Cubs.

"A teacher and a leader, he was all that and more," [Ernie] Banks said. "He signed me to my first contract with the Cubs, and then he walked me into the Hall of Fame.

"He was the most positive person that I have ever been around. I transferred that into my life. What he did with his mind and his heart and his spirit . . . he wanted to bridge the gap of black baseball players playing in the major leagues.”

On July 18, 2006, at age 94, Buck O'Neil signed a one-day contract with the Kansas City T-Bones making him the oldest person to make a plate appearance in a professional baseball game.

Here’s a nice leftover photo from yesterday …

I had the strongest sense that this warship is going to be called upon to do heavy duty at some future, critical time. God bless her, and all who serve her.

Hi Gretchen :)

Looking back at the photos from yesterday, I got an ominous feeling too ...

*smiles modestly* Thank you, thank you. It's taken a lot of work to get to this point and I'd like to thank all my friends and family who helped me to get here. And I'd like to thank my internet connection for actually working correctly for longer than two seconds.
