I think you misinterpret the motivations. Its not joy at the spilling of blood. Its relief that in some cases there is justice in the world, and also that these scum won't be around to hurt other innocents.

I'm pretty sure that's exactly what it isn't in a great many cases. Contrary to popular myth, justice is not and should not be about revenge. The Republic will not function when justice is merely vengeance in pretty clothes. This is why the 'retributive justice' crowd is so repugnant.
