Big Brother is shouting at you Last updated at 21:02pm on 16th September 2006
Big Brother is not only watching you - now he's barking orders too. Britain's first 'talking' CCTV cameras have arrived, publicly berating bad behaviour and shaming offenders into acting more responsibly.
The system allows control room operators who spot any anti-social acts - from dropping litter to late-night brawls - to send out a verbal warning: 'We are watching you'.
Middlesbrough has fitted loudspeakers on seven of its 158 cameras in an experiment already being hailed as a success. Jack Bonner, who manages the system, said: 'It is one hell of a deterrent. It's one thing to know that there are CCTV cameras about, but it's quite another when they loudly point out what you have just done wrong.
'Most people are so ashamed and embarrassed at being caught they quickly slink off without further trouble.
'There was one incident when two men started fighting outside a nightclub. One of the control room operators warned them over the loudspeakers and they looked up, startled, stopped fighting and scarpered in opposite directions.
'This isn't about keeping tabs on people, it's about making the streets safer for the law-abiding majority and helping to change the attitudes of those who cause trouble. It challenges unacceptable behaviour and makes people think twice.'

"I don't see anything wrong with this..."
The next step is to put one in your home and you will be told how to live, what to eat, what to think.... When the muslims take control of the UK, the imams will be watching.
...Wrong "Smith"
So you wouldn't mind living in a totalitarian society?
It's frightening to think that such socialistic, elitist practices can be thought of just hunky-dory.
There was a book a few years ago titled: "We are all Nazis" - the premise being that the Nazi - or Communist - or Socialist personality lives within every society. It only takes a breakdown of personnel liberties and laws made "for the common good" - for anarchy - and the Nazi personalities who think they have the innate right to rule their neighbors will pop to the surface, ready and willing to be the Block Master.
I do not care to live in a society where you are watched and rebuked by some little squirrel behind the safety of anonymity, everywhere you go.
First it was the cameras, now the microphones - and then? arbitrary "reporting" on neighbors, etc etc.
Maybe it's time for some people to read the histories of the Bolshevik Revolution and Nazi Germany...and learn what one segment of a controlled society suffers from the Nazi-personality in every society just waiting for the opening.
This march from cameras to mikes to ? - is like the frog and the hot water: Put the frog in a pan of cold water and heat it slowly, he will stay and get boiled. Plop him into hot water and he'll jump straight out.
I prefer not to blindly do the back stroke while the water gets progressively hotter.
I'd say the minimum-wage rent-a-cop supposedly watching all those monitors is a real weak spot in Big Brother's master plan.
rofl, secure beneath the watchful eyes indeed!!!
thank you. This is pretty much what I recalled when I read the article.
Modern society's replacement for moral values governing personal behavior, and an all-seeing, all-knowing God.
Well, people will eventually become very blasé about being barked at all the time, won't they? I suggest Big Brother get to work right away on those submission collars Kirk and crew had to wear in "The Gamesters of Triskellon."
In a culture where people are not instilled with internal limitors on their behaviors, increaing external limitors must be provided.
Welcome totalitarianism.

In other words to have a decent functioning free society, people have to want to be civil, simply because it's the right thing to do.
The novel "1984" has gone from a fictional warning to a training manual for government.
Oh, really?
Ever notice how the nanny-state tries to spin this kind of silliness?
It's all about keeping tabs on people, you bunch of damned idiots!
If it comes here, I'm checking out. Seriously. It's misery enough with the @#$%&*! buses, but now to have people monitoring our every move, and barking at us... No! No, thank you!
Ping
Only if they find a body.
"Good morning, good morning, good morning, and what a lovely day it is!"
