HOUSTON -- Two men have been charged with capital murder after allegedly beating a Vietnam War veteran with a baseball bat, robbing him, then abandoning him after throwing his prosthetic legs into a river, authorities said Thursday.
Kenneth Dollery, 22, and Hollis Buckley, 21, cousins from Baytown, east of Houston, confessed to beating Barney Goodman in a conflict over money, said Liberty County Sheriff Greg Arthur.
"They showed some remorse _ remorse for being caught, remorse for doing it, hard to tell," Arthur said. The men have a handful of misdemeanor convictions on their records but nothing major, Arthur said.
Goodman, who rented a room from Buckley's mother and apparently owed some rent money, seemed to have gotten into a truck with the men willingly, Arthur said. A surveillance camera from a drive-through ATM where Goodman withdrew money showed all three men together in a truck before the incident, he said.
"I'm not sure they intended on killing him, I don't know," Arthur said.
After the beating, Dollery and Buckley allegedly took $600 in cash from Goodman, threw his prosthetic legs into the San Jacinto River and drove away, police said. Goodman crawled up the bank and was spotted by motorists. He died Saturday at Memorial Hermann Hospital in Houston.
The men face life imprisonment or the death penalty if convicted.
They were being held without bond at the Liberty County Jail.
These days, few people show respect to our country's veterans. I hope they get everything that is coming to them.
Yes I hope they get a rope and hang them.
Git a rope
Hey, it's Texas, these guys will be pushin up daisies in no time ...
Let's see, the one the right should claim he's IQ is too low, thus sparing his life*.
He sure as hell looks like the town idiot.
* Yet another gift from the USSC, keep the low witted murderers alive, they're too f'ing stupid to be put to death!
Criminals usually don't ask whether you have a DD214...
Whoever gave him that haircut should be facing hard time as well!
