Ex-local radio host allegedly violates probation (Houston) (Jon Mathews)

RICHMOND -- Former radio talk show host Jon Matthews surrendered at the Fort Bend County jail today after an arrest warrant was issued for him for allegedly violating probation.

Matthews received a seven-year deferred adjudication sentence two years ago when he pleaded guilty to a charge of indecency with a child.

According to court records, Matthews, 61, tested positive for alcohol, and was discussing sexual fantasies over the Internet.

Matthews was placed on probation after he admitted exposing himself to an 11-year-old girl in October 2003 in his Sugar Land home.

Among the conditions of the probation were that Matthews abstain from alcohol use and refrain from viewing sexually obscene material.

The order for Matthew's arrest was signed July 28 by state District Judge Brady Elliott.

Bail for Matthews was set at $20,000.

According to the police report, the girl -- who was a neighbor -- arrived at the Matthews house to play with Matthews' puppy.

Matthews answered the door in his underwear and the girl told investigators Matthews sat on the floor and that his genitals were exposed.

Court documents state Matthews then left the room to put on a pair of shorts.

"Upon his return to the living room, the Defendant pulled his shorts and underwear down and exposed his genitals to Sara Post (pseudonym), then he said 'whoops.' Sara Post demonstrated how far down the Defendant pulled his shorts and underwear. The Defendant told Sara Post not to tell what he had done."

After he was sentenced, Matthews attorney, Stephen Doggett, read a statement from his client.

"To the complainant and her parents, I again apologize," he said.

Matthews, who often took a hard law-and-order stance on his radio show, took some potshots and the American judicial system outside the courthouse after he was sentenced.

"Those of you who have listened to my radio show and read my newspaper columns over the years know how strong a supporter I was of our criminal justice system. I can only say how misguided I was. Our criminal justice system is not based on justice, it is a quota system where conviction is the only scorecard," he said.

I'm flattered by your tagline, but I stole that from Michael Berry, another Houston radio talk host, and City Councilman, so I really don't need to be attributed. Thanks.

Hey, one of 'em was me!

It took forever to get ahold of him, but it was a kind of thrill to hear myself on the radio.

BUSTED!

Now, I am not sure if Jon's FM talk show was public service or a platform for him to explore his own fantasies.

I hope and pray the state is wrong and Jon is not a creepy old man that asks little girl if they would like to play with his puppy.

That was when I was young and ignorant, not near-omniscient like now.

That's indeed a sad commentary on society today. You men have to be so cautious that you seem curt. Any time you're around a little girl the first thing on your mind is SEX CRIME, SEX CRIME!

Even we women are suspects if we're strangers. Sad.

And we can lay the blame squarely at the feet of sicko people like Jon.

" OTOH, Barney Fwank is still running loose in New England....but that, apparently, is OK."

Apparently the difference between consenting adults and exploiting children is alien to some.

So you called Jon Mathews and asked him for advice on teenage girls?

Did he suggest you buy a puppy?

Naw, I was whining about all the taxes the government took out of my paycheck.

When your 16 and workin' at Jack-in-the-box, every dime counts.

Jon never seemed to be as upstanding as manager/host Dan Patrick (who cited God in his life repeatedly, unlike Jon Matthews).

This is not to say that Jon was ammoral or immoral, just not clear in espousing the same standard as others at the station.

Wasn't he on 97Rock in the Moby years?

The entire Dan Patrick team was released from Clear Channel's KPRC950AM in a local election year. I certainly think the move was political (and the station manager who came in wanted an end to the "God talk" and "bill numbers" of legislation). They put in brash loudmouths from outta town (and one had to change his spoken politics from lib to conservative).

Barney Frank had a prostitution ring running out of his office. Consenting adults be damned, the landmark SC decision STILL did not legalize prostitution.

Jon was a local hero in Sugar Land when I was a teenager. The DA, cops and judges were his friends, no way he was set up.

My uncle also reminded me of the times he would talk about the cute, very smart 11 year old neighbor of his on the radio. The guy is sick.

My wife (who is in the medical field) always wondered if he may have had a small stroke/brain damage when he had his heart attack/bypass incident a few years before. This is known for sometimes changing behaviours/releasing inhibitions, etc.

One the reasons she says this is that it is very unusual for someone to just up and start this kind of thing in their 60's. And try as they might, the police were never able to find any prior history of this, no matter how hard they tried.

Someone no doubt also forced him to get drunk and engage in internet sex.

The internet is not private. Fortunately, many criminals don't realize this.
