Yes. But their culture was totally re-wired by us. And enough of their supporters - even those not actively taking up arms, but those supporting the politics of Nazi Germany & Imperial Japan - were killed.
I believe, as ugly as it may have been, that the firebombing of Japanese and German cities is what lead to us being able to have peaceful relations with them now. It wasn't pleasant, but it won the war for the long term.
