On that day, way back then...

I was just a sweet little girl that just had her fourth brithday.

Thank you for making it so I could have so many more in such a free country.

No wonder this is a day seared in your memory. Everything became "before" July 27, 1966 or "after" July 27, 1966. I bet on that day your brain never gave a thought to 2006. What a ride we all have taken since the '60s.!

Another memory that just came back to me....drunken recruits in the PX playing "Someday,We'll Be Together" by the Supremes over and over on the jukebox!

I don't think I'll ever be able to hear that song again without seeing that picture in my mind.

During ITR, one of the 'Troop Leaders' was a perenially hungover Corporal who's given name was General James...so we had to listen to Corporal General James giving us orders for a few weeks.

Right as ITR ended, he got busted (undoubtedly drunk and disorderly in Oceanside), so he was Private General James.

Congrats on your anniversary. Just yesterday I suddenly remembered that it was fifty years ago this month that I arrived at Wheelus Air Base, in Tripoli, Lybia to begin an 18 month assignment. Time really flies.

God,18 months in Libya couldn't have been a lot of fun. Needless to say, there was no AC...or was there?

Marines frighten me

They frightened a whole bunch of us, especially during the first few months.

More than a few of my buddies had absolutely no memory of the first 2 or 3 days of "Shock and Awe"...I remember every damn second, however - including the first night when they bedded us down in some platformed tent barracks and a few maggots sobbed themselves to sleep (as in "What the f*ck have I gotten myself into??") - and predawn when 4 or 5 Drill Instructors plowed in yelling at the top of their lungs, and tipping over the first 2 or 3 rows of racks....controlled mayhem on their part.

"Marines frighten me."

Why, I wonder? Is it because of the steely-eyed killer look, or the fact that they're about the only ones left who know what to do in a bayonet fight?

Semper Fi,

Everything became "before" July 27, 1966 or "after" July 27, 1966

Terms that I either hadn't heard before that date, or that, at the very least, gained new meaning:

Scumbag....pukeface....maggot....sweetheart....Bend over and spread your cheeks....skin it back and milk it down....house mouse....get on your face....burn one; non smokers brush your fangs....sh*tcan....

The list goes on and on.
