This is a very thoughtful piece.

To people used to street corner beheadings under Saddam Hussein, the sight of a man with underpants on his head simply cannot have touched upon the same emotions. The uproar, therefore, was for our benefit, to touch upon our revulsion over torture and public humiliation.

I'm not sure I agree here. Beheading an infidel, or a criminal, fits in well with the Islamic world's cruel idea of justice. However, putting "honorable Islamic warriors" in an infidel prison where they are degraded and mocked by their "Christian" jailors is beyond the pale for the Islamic world's highly overdeveloped sense of dignity.

I do agree that often the "outrage" directed against American actions is in fact a rather sophisticated put-on designed for American ears. It wouldn't shock me to learn that casualty numbers are inflated.
