I'm not so sure it's about self-absorbtion. Rather, it could be an avoidance of pain, suffering, and the headaches that going along with the rearing of children.

My wife and I are childfree, and we've talked about this subject many, many times. We've chosen to remain without children because of two main reasons: One, the level of patience required for children vastly exceeds our ability. I understand that this a character failing on our part, but at least we're cognizant of it.

Two, we have a pessimistic view of our society, and would not want to bring another life into this world. Our civilization is inundated with shallow and materialistic pursuits and it's only going to get worse, not better. Who wants to bring a child into the world when - despite our best intentions - they'll most likely become a consumer drone?

I used to think that way....then I became more optimistic. What if MY kids help make a change in the status quo? Someone has to....

I can understand your feelings. But throughout history every generation has thought that it was the best there was, and that the world was going to go to heck after them. Somehow the world kept moving.

Kids are hard, and it takes patience and sacrifice to raise them. Many today do not have those qualities. Sounds like you both realize that you might not, and have chosen to not have kids.

I agree with you about society at large. However, when you see your children, stand up against the selfishness of the world, it is truly a site to behold!
