25% of Lebanese are Christian and thus are innocent and deserve our support.

Oh, I agree, but if the regular Lebanese army engages Israeli forces, the Israelis have no choice but to engage them with maximum force.

The Lebanese Army have been corrupted by the Hezbollah terrorists.

Let the Israelis destroy them without mercy.

"Kinda like the abused woman defending the boyfriend who beats her. Though perhaps he is holding a knife to her throat."

My thoughts exactly. I heard Hannity tell Newt Gingrich of this news on his radio show today and Newt said "Well then that makes them the enemy and they have declared war on Israel." James Woolsey was also on and said if we cut off Syria's ability to facilitate the weaponry from Iran, that will be a good first step. Hannity asked why we can't just go and bomb Iran's nuke facilities. He said "One thing at a time."

Logic is not what they need. Israel will kick their asses so badly. The Lebanese can't even secure their own country from inferior - as compared to Israel - forces from Syria. Yet, they want to fight Israel as cannon fodder for Hezbollah?

Thanks to posts like yours, I've learned a lot about the concept of "shaping the battlespace". But I've also learned, mostly in the last day or two, as Israel has been probing more across the border, that they are also doing it to prep for the particularly treacherous nature of the Hizbullah defensive config. They've apparently got a huge complex system of bunkers, tunnels, caves, everything booby trapped and set up to ambush any troop penetration from the rear. So while they are shaping the battlespace, I think they are also carrying out a lot of recon and probes to get a very accurate fix on what they are up against, instead of just plowing in their with a large force. Very smart, but I just hope they have enough time to execute.

Ah! So Lebanon now shows its true face.

No wonder it let a terrorist organization control the southern part of its country. How convenient, professing that they dare not confront hezbollah for fear of starting a civil war..HA!

It was a smokescreen all along!

Never trust a word that comes out of a Muslim's mouth!

Now that its obvious that Lebanon is in bed with the terrorists, let them share the same fate as the baby killers they fight beside!

Undoubtedly SOF and recon operations are part and parcel of "shaping the battlespace". It is the new way of ground warfare for western powers.

As for how much time does Israel have? There is only one man on Earth who can stop Israel and I don't think President Bush wants them to stop until their mission is accomplished.

I'll have to see it to believe it. Remember that the Shiites (who are pro-Hezbollah) are the largest group of Lebanon. The government cannot look pro-Israel if they are to win their hearts and mind when it's time to disarm Hezbollah and control the Shiite areas. I would be surprised if they were stupid enough to send in the army against Israel.

Just shows they're more afraid of Syria and Iran than of Israel or the US.

EXACTLY It shows how embedded Hezbollah is in the Lebanese government.

This is the same formula that they've used before. Hit hard with air and then the ground troops come in later.

That is common modern warfare against an entrenched enemy. Cut them off. Bomb them from the air. And if you can, encircle them from behind. That is what we did to liberate Kuwait. Eventually the ground forces go in. If Israel had a population like the Chinese or Iranians, some mass casualty all out assaults against entrenched lines would then generate strategically acceptable losses. Israel can not afford such heavy losses. They are outnumbered. And unlike the Iraqis that invaded Kuwait, these Hezbollha Iranian Fighters are suicidal. Small tactical bunker busting nukes would work best in this case, but hey, that is not kosher currently. If a large rocket however kills a few hundred in Tel-Aviv, nukes will be on the table.

They should have done some quick bombing and immediately sent in the ground troops.

If you want to destroy an enemy let him concentrate then attack with overwhelming force.

As for the Lebanese Army I guess they will join with Hezbollah and strive the invaders out I wonder who will be in charge?

Could be that the Lebanese Army and the IDF will make a Hezbollah sandwich.

Why is Lebanon willing to fight to drive the invaders out but not to prevent them from entering?.

Wasn't Lebanon mostly Christian in the recent 20th Century?

Yes, at one time they were and even today Lebanon has the by far "largest" proportion of Christians of any Arab/Muslim country...which doesn't say much considering most Christians in Arab countries number in single digests to begin with, but the majority of Lebanon's Christian communities were forced to flee during Ottoman rule over the country and in later times with the Lebanese Civil War, aka Christians vs Mulims war. During the Civil War Syrian forces got heavily involved, first as "supposedly" to help out the Christians and in the end turned around and occupying the area since last year. They also were the ones who assassinated president elect Bachir Gemayel, a Christian Maronite and part of the prominate Gemayel Family(Soumaya Gemayel was the wife of Carlos Slim Helu, the richest man in Latin America and rank 17th riches in the world). This family had close ties with Israeli and because of this when Bachir Gemayel asked Isreal to help assist in getting rid of Syria and extreme Islamists groups in Lebanon he was killed by Syrian agents and then Syria installed its own puppet president.

And no thanks to that terrorist Yasser Arafat who supplied and armed Islamists in Lebanon for the express purpose of subjecting the Christian Lebanese to ethnic cleansing. I think their government stop taking census in the 1930's and its not clear how many Christians remain in the country but their number is not that high as it was thirty some years ago. General consesus is that Muslim population makes up about 65% based on the fact of mass exodus many Christians and their lower birth rates then those of the Muslims. So basically right now Christians population in Lebanon is outnumbered. At one point their Christian community made up about 55%. Nowdays the Maronite community is the largest Christian community at (20%), followed by Greek Orthodox (5%), Greek Melkite Catholic Church(5%) and other religious groups such as Jews, Persians, Armenian Orthodox and Kurds who make up another (4%). So in total all non Muslim communities make up about 34% of the country, if that. The Christian groups tented to focus more on the Greek heritage of the country mostly due to the close ties which they had from the days of the Byzantine Empire, identifying more with the pre-Arab-pre-Muslim civilizations of Lebanon and until recently Greek was maintained as the liturgical language but has gone down due to mass migrations to other countries in the 20th centuries. It was this non-Muslim/Arab identity which was the cause of the bloody battles between Muslim and Christian Lebanese in the 20th century. Currently most of the Christian communities had fled due to fighting between Christians and the Muslims and live in Europe, North and South American. You also have the Sunnis Muzzies in the mix, but they only make about one fifth of the population and they are supposedly not friends with the Shiites but who knows. Listen to what cowardly rats Hezbulla is, they are forcing themselves into Christian neighborhoods to supposedly find shelter from the bombing and knowing how bad blood between the Christians and Muslims still exists there, I wonder how that episode is going to play out.

Wrong. Christians in Lebanon are innocent. They used to have their own milita but were decimated by Hezbollah in the Lebanese Civil War. As a result, Hezbollah is charge of the country.

Yup, you are right, MinorityRepublican, from the newsreports I'm hearing those cowards are now forcing themselves into Christian neighborhoods to hide out. I can just see how that is going to play out given the bad blood existing between the two still.

Too bad Christians are not organized. They need a leader. Sort of like King Ferdinard and Queen Isabella in Spain who expelled the Moors.

The regular Lebanese army is made up mostly of Shiite Muslims so no matter what Israel will still be mostly fighting Shiite Muslims then Christians.

Agree with JR. Israel is wise to recon before hand since it is said that sending boots on the ground up there will be somewhat more difficult but I'm sure Israel will be able to accomplish its goal.

Lebanon IS Hezbollah - there are no innocent civilians

I would take issue with that. Not everyone who disagrees with Hezbollah has the power or the will to put it into action. There are many, especially Lebanese Christians, who have been oppressed by the numbers that Hezbollah has mustered. Some are lucky enough to get out. Others are lucky if they can simply duck and hide long enough to survive the next battle started by the muslims.
