One thing that really does get my panties in a wad is that the MSM won't distinguish between adult stem cell research and embryonic stem cell research. The former has had many successes (that's what bone marrow transplants are about, and we all know about those); and the latter has had no success, and may never have.

Too many voters don't know the difference. And the MSM won't tell them.

If you asked people whether they would prefer their money support adult stem cell research, which has had many successes, or embryonic stem cell research, which so far has been a dismal failure, I think the answers would be clear.

The thing is, President Bush is not forbidding embryonic stem cell research, he is simply taking a stand that he will not be responsible for "compelling" the American people to pay for it.

There are many private entities and universities that are conducting ESC with private funds, which is how it should be.

Those are called "snowflake babies", and W was in a room full of them. All of them thought it was a good deal!

Adoption is hard these days - many couples have to look overseas. I'd bet that many couples would adopt embryos if that was more common.

Absolutely I agree a government should not be seen as supporting something that has questionable ethics which by the way IMHO IVF does also and am very uncomfortable about the fact in Britain you can get this treatment free under the NHS.

Tell me if I am wrong on this Common Tator. The senate vote according to Fox news was 63-37. That is short of the amount needed to override a veto. That seems positive to me. It could be better, but even the Senate didn't have the votes to override on the first pass.

As to the House, it was 250 something to 193? My numbers are a bit off, but in the ballpark. Does that mean the 250 something voted to overturn the veto, or to uphold it?
Even so they didn't have enough to override.

I didn't see my Senators on the lists that were posted, but I checked the link. They both voted YEA, both a couple of stinkers. Both running for office. May they get what they deserve.

If I remember correctly, Frist was pushing to get this bill up for a vote. A leader has some clout. He's a stinker just like my two senators.

Unfortunately, I can't Freep much tonight as I had to bring home a bunch of work, but I just had to drop in and toast Dubya on his first veto.

It is shameful that a bill of this sort came out of a Republican congress. Dubya has been so patient with this bunch of goons. Although the Constitution allows him to veto any legislation he wants, for whatever reason he wants, he has not used this power simply to reinforce his bravado or as a means of holding other issues hostage. He respects that Congress is democratically elected and represents the will of the people. I believe it is for that reason that he has used the veto pen sparingly. This bill, however, stands for everything that would make a moral conscience shudder.

I'll bet nobody here even remembers the "first veto" of any other president? Dubya's makes history. I can't even begin to describe how proud of him I am.

The more the government tries to push themselves on the masses the more I resist. The government is not responsible for my health and safety in day to day living. They need to get back to basics, IMO.

There is no mandate against embryonic stem cell research. It can be done privately. This was a veto over a plan for us (our government) to fund it, which we shouldn't be doing anyway. It's for private companies to do.

Boo to Kay Bailey for voting this way. At least Cornyn voted right. I like Kay Bailey most of the time, but she is a little squishy on some issues.
