I have read many Hillermans. I'll go look for that one to refresh myself as to whether I read it or not; the title sounds familiar. My memory of what I read is not very good.
We had a telescope with us, since we were on field studies anyway, and yes that would be a popular place with astronomers. We had the most incredible look at Saturn with the rings so crisp and clear.
We were there during the Perseids meteor showers too, so watched "shooting stars" all night.
