. . .Part of the source of that discrepancy lies in the shift in reading curriculum over the past 25 years.

As the authors of the NEA study observe: In 1980, students were commonly assigned books by Ernest Hemingway or John Steinbeck. Today, students are more likely to be assigned books by Toni Morrison or Julia Alvarez. But "For Whom the Bell Tolls" is a boy-friendly book in a way that "Beloved" is not.

During visits to predominantly African-American public schools around the nation, I've learned that many black boys would rather read "For Whom the Bell Tolls" -- a book without any major black characters -- than anything by Morrison.

I'm unmotivated at times and I love my video games, but I certainly never wanted to live with my parents about 3 days after I graduated High School.

Maybe it's just me. Of course I voluntarily went to Iraq as a civilian too :)

That article says absolutely nothing of value. It identifies an obvious problem, but offers no solution. That, and the plural of 'curriculum' is 'curricula,' not 'curriculums.'

So much for that superior education.

This is happening because government run schools and Psycho doctors are drugging young boys into inactivity.

They are being taught by the leftist NOW loving trash in this country, that being male is wrong, and if you are a white male you are 3 times as wrong.

Past time for Dads to stand up and refute this crap, take their boys hunting, fishing, racing, whatever and counteract this BS they are being taught.

Getting them off of the drugs and letting them be Boys would help tremendously too.

Good article. God forbid that boys actually act like they've got testosterone running through their bodies.

As an aside, I've heard of Steinbeck and Hemingway. Who are those other authors? I would suspect that their books are the equivalent of chick flicks? No heterosexual boy is going to be interested in that.

Still, I'd rather have sons then daughters. At least with sons, you can always just kick them out of the house if they turn out to be lazy bums.

One co-worker of mine paid $60,000 to send her to college for four years. Then she got pregnant and he paid another $25,000 for a big wedding for her (she HAD to have the very best). A year later, she left her husband and went back home to daddy. Now he is supporting her and her kid.

I have two sons, no daughters, and I count my blessings every day.

For too long, we've assumed that by ignoring gender differences, we'd eliminate gender gaps.

Anyone who thinks there are no differences between girls and boys is too damn stupid to be associated with children in any capacity.

That is not true of young women. Why?

I would believe that many of these young women:

A. Get married to a man who is motivated, has an income, a career, etc.

B. Are out working hard as all Americans should

I think part of the problem lies with the parents. In the not too distant past, a boy had chores around the house and would be expected to get a part-time job as a paperboy or mowing lawns. When they graduated high school they were expected to leave home, whether it was to join the military, go to college, or get married. No self respecting young man would WANT to live at home long after graduation.

I'm amazed at how many boys graduate college and have NEVER held any sort of job. The parents pay the boys every expense and provides them with an allowance so large that they don't have to work. When they return home they have a large bedroom, with TV, Computer, Video Games etc.

In other words, if the boys are allowed to lay around at home and be waited on hand and foot like they are the Emperor Nero, why would they WANT to go out into the "real world" where they have to worry about going to work and paying the rent.

"It is a phenomenon that is getting a lot of media attention as part of the so-called "boy crisis" and one that cuts across all demographics -- rich, poor, black, white, urban and rural. According to the Census Bureau, one-third of young men ages 22 to 34 are still living at home with their parents -- a roughly 100 percent increase in the past 20 years. That is not true of young women. Why?"

"Boys" go home to live with their parents, the girls tend to go live with "men".

A rather simple concept, some "boys" should take note of that.

I think this author offers no insights. But in today's world, I could see myself not wanting to get into this stupid politically correct world. Schools have a femininist/humanist/liberal/feelings bias because 70 per cent of teachers are female. If you get out of school with your testicles still in place you will probably have to enter a touchy feely workplace. I have seen some sociological research talking about female expectations of the workplace. Females place a high value on interpersonal relationships in the workplace and liking and being liked is important. My work experience has been that men like myself look at a job as way to put bread on the table. Whether they like the boss or whether they personally click with co-workers is not terribly important as long as they are well paid. This is to say men tend to work for money and women want positive emotions reinforced. Of course, I am looking back, I have been retired for a while.

When I read the article and the replies, I realized that I teach a very masculine history. All about battles and elections and constitutions and such. About 65 percent of my students are women. Many of them have never heard of the Cold War or Valley Forge or even NATO. Seems to me that this stuff--which the guys eat up--probably should be known by all. Is the feminizing of the culture a "dumbing down of the culture?"

Hmmm, now I know why we use screen names.

Dr. Helen (the Instapundit's wife) has been beating this subject to death over the past couple of months. From what I can tell the major issues are: There are other issues, but these are the ones I think are probably the most significant. People today don't want to be around children, especially boys. Boys are considered to be some sort of error. It's as if the parent is at fault for bringing a potential child abuser and a potential rapist into the world.

My nephew would be one of these young men. He's dropped out of college and is living at home.

However, I will cut him some slack. His father died less than 2 years ago of cancer. He's also had some health problems (broke his ankle and did something to his shoulder).

Hopefully, my nephew can get on with his life soon. He's a nice kid.

"He still lives at home and seems to have no ambitions beyond playing video games, hanging out with buddies and having sex."

Didn't anyone writing about this movie really see it?

He may have still lived at home, but he sold yachts and drove a Porsche, for gosh sakes!

Now the challenge is to use our new understanding of boys and girls to broaden educational options, customize learning to individual children and move beyond the gender wars...thank goodness after years and years of theorizing and studies we finally have arrived at the new understanding that boys and girls are different......

Yet title IX CONTINUES to allow colleges to offer FULL scholarships for girls to join college rowing teams with zero experience.

(and boys athletic scholarships are for all intents gone. The road to accademics has been taken from boys and given not to women, but to feminists.)
