Struck me as really odd too, and then telling the kid, "do what you have to do".
Something wierd about a father saying that to his son in what could have very well been their last moments on earth. I think most guys would have been screaming, "Shoot the &%$#@*' b@$t@rd!"

I don't think it's odd at all. To be calm and decisive in an emergency situation is generally a good thing. Getting hysterical usually isn't much help.

He probably did tell his kid to shoot the guy. I suspect it was a little hard for the kid to shoot someone with all of the anti-gun brainwashing they have for kids today.
"If you have to shoot, shoot him."
"But, dad, I don't want to kill someone."
"Do what you gotta do, son."
Maybe dad was sitting in traffic? This is Hollywood, after all.
