C'mon...I live in Texas.
My point, again, is not that illegal immigration "isnt" a problem...my point is the administration's views and actions on it are being twisted by political opportunists...who are using it (illegal immigration issues) as an instrument to remove the republican leadership. These people, chiefly democrats, have no real solution of their own...perhaps, would even perpetuate the problem.
The Rats will allow this "new" hot issue to mire the POTUS, and republicans, in order to gain seats in the House and Senate...that's what is currently driving this issue...an issue, which has been around for decades but is now is somehow Bush's "sole" fault.
Folks, you can keep on flaming away. However, I know I am right.
So what position of the administration and/or GW Bushes on illegal immigration do you support?
I bet you don't live near Laredo, or anywhere else right on the border. If you actually live on the border and don't see a problem with illegals, then you either have your head in the sand or you have some agenda for wanting the borders open.
That's a fair question, but I'm not sure it really matters. The issue is here now, and it should be addressed. And if the answer is "maintain the status quo", there's nothing improper about discussing whether that course of action is appropriate.
I am also in the rational, get to the root of the problem (Corrupt Mexican Government), crowd.
The problem with that approach is that the lag time is huge. Even if you could reform completely the Mexican government, how many decades would it take before the economic opportunity in Mexico and the U.S. was equivalent?
I agree that some of the wild-eyed xenophobia is out of place. I prefer some form of reliable securing of the border, but I don't demand kicking them all out of this country either. A better I.D. system, integrated with the IRS and immigration control would be fine. As long as they work and obey the laws, I think they should be able to stay, for the most part. That makes me a RINO to some, but oh well.
But as moderate as I think I am on this, I'm still a bit flabbergasted by Dubya's position on this. Making these people into full citizens when they entered the country illegally, and when we don't even have an accurate count, is ridiculous. Give them a guest worker status, with some limited rights to leave and later return, is fine. But don't make them all citizens, particularly when the net effect is to bump them ahead of the folks who have been trying to immigrate legally.
If Dubya is way out on one side on this issue, well, maybe he should have a political price to pay.
You know what, i don't think its Bush's fault. But the push for a guest working and amnesty program yet again is. He's not standing up doing what's best for the contry. His answer was you can't deport these people. He and the Repulicans in congress need to advocate following the law. Not rewarding law breakers.
I really feel like this, they figure they got 40 million new voters here and they are all pandering. Why 40 million because everyone you start on the road that eventually leads to citizenship means they can bring their family member to the contry legally.
I am a naturalized American. It took us 7 years to finalize my paperwork and it costed my parents and my grandparents alot of money to do this. I take huge offense and these people that don't want to follow the law and the lawmakers who don't want to follow the law.
They really have jumped the shark here and i think this is a huge turning point for the country.
Well gee, can't argue with that can we?</ Sarcasm>
So, indulging your scenario, the "Vast Democrat Immigration Conspiracy" has maneuvered President Bush into a situation where, if he gets tough on illegals and secures the border, he will ingratiate himself to 70% of the American public. Wow, that's pretty shrewd strategizing!
