7.7 magnitude earthquake hits Russian Far East

By Ruth Mantell, MarketWatch Last Update: 10:35 PM ET Apr 20, 2006

SAN FRANCISCO (MarketWatch) -- A 7.7 magnitude earthquake hit the Russian Far East early Friday afternoon, officials reported.

There were reports of damage in some Pacific region villages, and some injuries, according to the Associated Press.

The Japan Meteorological Agency said the earthquake posed no tsunami threat to Japan.

The epicenter of the quake, with a depth of almost 27 miles, was in the Koryak region, about 3,900 miles north northeast of Moscow, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The quake is considered "major," just a notch below the most-severe "great" category , and occurred at 12:25 p.m. local time on Friday, the USGS added.

A couple of days ago, San Francisco commemorated the 100-year anniversary of the "Great San Francisco Earthquake of 1906," a magnitude 7.8 earthquake, which razed surrounding areas.

According to the USGS, that earthquake was the most damaging in U.S. history.

Worth noting that it was a complete whiff for prediction frauds Stan Deyo and Jim Berkland, and occured as far from a New or Full Moon as it could possibly be.

I sure couldn't find it! But I don't trust the search feature, either. Every time I stop to screw around with THAT thing... I get burned to the ground on posting rapidly. I want 10,000 posts/threads like the master poster... "NormsRevenge!!!" (he's da man!!!)(grin)

The towns of Tilichiki and Khailino appear to have been right over the fault that moved.

Very very sad; the area was already an impoverished, depressing craphole with the highest rate of Tuberculosis in the entire world...

LOL.. No problem, that was a pretty big jolt, even if not a lot of folks felt it.

Your thread is different, not a repost, I'm only linking so it's easier for everyone to find the related threads.

My speed has jumped from 28kps to 50.6!!! I have a long way to go to get ahead you broadband guys and your "speed of light" always on connections. So that's why fast posting is so danged important to me, si?
