For better or for worse, this is the way it works in the big city -- you prosecute with the charges on which you can get a conviction or satisfy the public with a plea deal.
What Federal Prosecutor is going to take that case to court? To get that low in your career you'd have to do something really bad, like give the Attorney General a wedgy or start impersonating Moe Howard in court.

Why do I suspect that the gang members were all African American?
It was three blacks and a Puerto Rican.
Not that it matters, but the Puerto Rican was black as well.

Those who think that race is not significant in a case like this do not know the law in New York State. If the crime is designated a bias crime then it is treated from day one differently than a non-bias crime by the police department and the courts. That is why the police department ridiculously labeled this an economic rather than a bias crime.

But I have noticed that the management often lets them become hangouts,
I guess I shouldn't be surprised that our major metropolis has Popeye's. I grew up on the Gulf Coast (near New Orleans) where Popeye's started out. Livius is right; it was always a thug hangout, even back when I was in high school. There's a couple in Atlanta where I live now, but I don't recall seeing many when I lived in the Midwest or on the West Coast.

yeah, didn't you hear? The black little hoodlums only wanted his cell phone even though, they were chasing after him saying, "Let's get whitey".

I guess this isn't a hate crime, but a love crime?

Fast food is hit and miss in NYC. Some places are better than others. I know people who swear that the KFC on 14th is the best in the city.

New York isn't just a city.
Its a socialist hell hole filled with peverts, thieves, and imbeciles who prey on each other and think they are superior to the rest of us.
They all deserve each other.

How some of you people can live in a city...ANY city...is beyond my comprehension. I don't even want to live in a village. All you hear out in the country are the horror stories, but NYC is one of the best places in the world to live and work in. Sure, nasty stuff happens, but dumb cruelty and sadism can be found all over the world; there it just gets more coverage.

The politically correct term you used "African American" is incorrect.
The correct term is "African or American"

Remember the Wichita Massacre?
A notorious crime a few years back (virtually ignored, naturally, by the mainstream media) where two armed black men invaded a home, attacked the occupants (young white people), forced them to perform sex acts, raped the girls, took them all out to a field in the middle of the night, shot them execution-style, and then ran them over with a truck for good measure.
(More reasons for all law-abiding people to own firearms.)
The killers are serving life in prison for their disgusting crimes, but avoided hate crime prosecution because...because...uh...black men never commit hate crimes, right? Black people are never racist, right?
Actually, what really got me angry was the virtual media blackout on this incident in Wichita, not the lack of hate crime prosecution. I guess white people getting killed by blacks just isn't news, at least in the eyes of guilty white liberal journalists.
I believe the whole idea of "hate crimes" is stupid --- a crime is a crime, regardless of the criminal's racial views. "Hate crimes" were invented to hi-light white criminal/black victim crime --- not the far, far more prevalent black criminal/white victim crimes.
Bill Cosby got it right. Too much contemporary Black American culture, esp. in a lot of music, celebrates criminals, thuggery, and racism against whites. Years ago it was blues, jazz, and Motown. Now it's a death culture. And the new music really sucks...

I can remember just a couple of months ago when a kid named "Fat" Nick took a baseball fat to a black in his neighborhood and all the newspapers were calling it a racist act. I live in Upstate, NY but you want to know something? NYers are dopes.

True, New York is an amazing city. For the record, crime in NYC is at a thirty year low. .
We have murders here in Boca Raton too, by the way .. not too often, thank goodness.

Would love not to live in a city. The jobs just aren't in a small town unless you've lived there all your life or already have a profession.

Soon New Yorkers will have to carry side arms.
4 x .45 cal ....4x 57 cents = $2.28 , which is more than the lives of these 4 punks are worth, but I would spend it in a heart beat.

But you must remember that N.Y.City's crime statistics are compiled by the same police department that said this case is not a bias-crime.

I got a little tired of having guns pointed at me by doped up insane looking cops and doped up insane looking criminals.
My family must have had 30 cars stolen over a 10 year period.
Mot to mention all of the murders and robberies of my friends and relatives.
Lived in Miami since '94 where you don't need to be rich to legally arm yourself.
Anyone still living in NYC really is putting their families life in danger.
The city apparatchiks and the cops could care less about any of King Bloombergs subjects.
I'll trade Rays pizza for Reys pizza anyday.
