The Rowan-Salisbury School Board denied permission Monday night for the Gay-Straight Alliance to form a club at South Rowan High School.
The decision came in a meeting that drew more than 100 spectators at the board office in Salisbury. Television video taped at the meeting showed much of the crowd erupting into cheers after the board made its unanimous decision.
A large group of people held a rally outside the board offices Monday evening, voicing opposition to formation of the club.
According to its national Web site, the Gay-Straight Alliance serves to help members create a school environment in which all students and staff feel safe, regardless of their sexual orientation.
The issue had come before the school board at its March 27 meeting, and the board had decided to delay a decision and get more information about the club.
During the March 27 meeting, board member Jim Shuping told fellow members that he had received a number of complaints from parents about the club. Several board members also said they were concerned that the club could become a distraction at South Rowan High.
According to a recent publication by the National Education Association and several other organizations, the Equal Access Act of 1984 allows organizations such as the Gay-Straight Alliance the right to form and meet at schools -- provided school systems permit other clubs to do the same.
In a number of cases, including Kentucky and Utah, federal courts have supported the right of students to form clubs such as the Gay-Straight Alliance..
Several Charlotte-Mecklenburg high schools have similar clubs, which operate the same as other extracurricular clubs and organizations.
Do you mean fundie like in fundamental Christian, or fundie like in fundamental right to sexual orientation? Everyone is a fundamentalist nowadays, and all are promoting their own agenda.
I seem to remember the law being written to give equal access to Constitutionally guaranteed activities e.g. Religion.
Does anyone really believe the law was written to provide access to and recognition of clubs premised upon unlawful, disordered and even premarital sex in schools? It is a fact that sodomy was illegal in many States in 1984; 9 years prior to the Lawrence decision in 2003. Underage sex is still illegal...
I think the legislature that wrote the law would disagree as would I or anyone else with an ounce of common sense that the liberal interpretation of the law is not "clearly established" BUT rather clearly errant and clearly deviant; LOL
Don't forget Big Sisters -they too have opened thier arms to and been infiltrated by homosexual activists that are telling kids that homosexual sex is okay!
The fact that they exclude gay scout masters would argue otherwise.
No more so than their excluding convicted murderers from being Scoutmasters argues that the BSA obsesses over its members' "death-of-others orientation."
I can only wonder what this has to do with the perversion that is homosexuality.
Perhaps in their meetings (the agenda of which will be that of the homosexual)the attendees will be treated to a special showing of Buttcrack Mountain.
Healthy youngsters should never be exposed to the insipid dangers of "discussion" meetings with those foul creatures whose only interest is in recruiting and ruining the lives of others.
If there's absolutely nothing that you can do about it you have my sympathy.
For those parents who do not want their children to associate in a "discussion" group with screwed-up homosexual children, then it's time to kiss the goobermint schools which facilitate this evil a goodbye.
So my point is that every kid gets teased and "bullied" (by their definition). They are fallen creatures. But these efforts aimed at only "keeping safe" those kids with confused sexual desires and/or behavior ignores everyone else's needs and doesn't even do what it claims to do. If you want to keep them safe, teach them that homosexuality is wrong.
