Wanted: Good web site or book to get non-PC History

Posted on 11/16/2005 6:19:48 PM PST by Joe Republc

I have to admit that although I'm an avid reader of current events, I have *not* been a good student of history. What I'd love to read now is History regarding Western Civilization and history on the United States.

While I'm not particularly looking for a 'conversative' history per se, I am most definitely want to avoid PC history or revisionist history. (BTW, I remember years ago reading a revisionist history book on the U.S., slamming Christopher Columbus, Washington, and Jefferson. My naive, pre-FReeper days in the '80s!!)

I'm cheap and enjoy reading things off the web, so a good web site would be much appreciated. Otherwise, recommendations on good history books would be great, too!

I know what I'm asking is fairly broad, but whatever advice you could offer would be appreciated.

Thanks,

-- Joe

P.S. Is Wikipedia any good as a reference?

I've been looking for old school textbooks on US history - before it was re-written. I'd be interested if you find anything.

Why won't you use the library?

David Barton's "Original Intent" is a great history of the Constitution and its originally intended meaning.

The best source is the original source! If you want to learn about the pilgrims read "Of Plymouth Plantation" by William Bradford. He was there...he should know. As for Columbus, we have "The log of Christopher Columbus" , his exact words...Davy Crockett wrote his own book in 1834, we have a copy of that as well...

Homeschooling curriculum sites have an incredible amount of Historical books...exact reproductions of the originals from the 1800's...enjoy your search!

P.J. O'Rourke once wrote that he owns a 1919 edition of Encyclopedia Britannica, and called it "The only reference I really trust." ;)

Exactly what I was going to say. Joe may want to try attending his state's annual homeschool convention to see the assortment that it is available in his area. It is amazing and encouraging.

A very good one we have in our house is "Don't Know Much About History: Everything You Need To Know About American History but Never Learned" by Kenneth Davis

Well written, a good read and very evenhanded on how it handles rthe sensitive subjects such as slavery, disagreements in the 1st Constitutional Congress, etc.

I highly recommend it. Kids will like it too!
