Yes, work on getting accepted. I am a pharmacist and it is rewarding/stressful. You have to be able to do 5 things at once (really only 4, direct traffic, and not kill anybody that day. That's all. You need to be a little A/R and O/C (anal retentive and obsessive/compulsive) because you have to do EVERYTHING right/perfect - shall we say. You have to have patience because after the 15th question of the day about, "What do I do about my cough?" you want to put on the tape labeled "Coughs 101."

You also get to watch kids grow up and bring their kids in for help. You get a lot of "thank you(s)." You sometimes see a patient (know their history) and realize that the new prescription for a heart medicine would probably kill her - (that's one reason why you do the 5 years of school) because the computer interactive drug utilization review (DUR) will not pick that problem up.

When you have kids, an assumption, your wife can work part time and actually be there for the kids and still make "good money."

If you look at pharmacy only as a job, then one can find a cubicle and verify scrips all day long. If you are into service and smiling, then retail or hospital can be good. Remember, nobody can "make" you grumpy or mad. It is always a choice of how you respond.

Yes, automation will come and we will see Rx vending machines, but, there will always be a pharmacist needed to watch over things.

Cheers and good luck...... (freepmail if any other qhestions)

My son is attending University of Houston for his Doctorate and is very much looking forward to perhaps opening his own neighborhood pharmacy one day. Unless torte reform goes by the wayside and there are no pills left to dispense. I just wonder if lawyers ever get prescriptions filled...

The last pharmacist that I asked about my cough, backed away from me about 5 steps. I asked him if cold medicine could bind up oral estrogen. Not a real silly question is it? He didn't have a clue.
