Just heard Samuel Jackson on an ad where he asks for support for the United
NEGRO College Fund.
Guess he's out now.

It is what blacks called themselves for a generation here. We have gone from Negro to black to African American. None of those names are bad in and of themselves.

Black is a perfectly fine, and hard to mess up word. I'm White, and Black people are full Americans, not hyphenated Americans...... Remember Roosevelts' speach about hyphenated americans (Teddy R, that is).
It's American Indians that are the real word problem. They are either Redskins, Indians, Natives' but going along with the Black and White monikers, Reds would be more appropo'; except for the Commie' connotation with that word! Of course then the Hispanics don't want to be called Browns, and what color would you use for Chineese?

He's correct.
"Negro" is NOT a racist word. Get over it.
And, I'm just glad a dirty leftist lib such as Rooney has the cajones to voice that opinion.

They still have the "United Negro College Fund"
There's nothing wrong with the word. When you get right down to it, "Colored", "Black", "African-American" are merely euphemisms for Negro.

It seems that each individual person has his own idea on what they liked to be called. Probably African American is the most used. I am an American Indian. People say, are you a Native American, I say yes and so are you. So I go by American Indian instead. The real truth is that we are all Americans, in the end.

Wow! If he had been a Democratic consultant, MSNBC might not be in business today, but under the circumstances, an apology's fine.../s

A few years ago on a Dallas TV station, one of the sports guys was reporting the finals of the NCAA basketball championship. He said "and tonight, the NAACP has a new champion!" At the end of the broadcast they made him come back, sort of redfaced, and say "Of course, that's the NCAA".

Yes it is.
One of my favorite sketches revolved around the blind, African-American Klansman.
I've never actually watched the show, but just the recapitulation of that skit on the pages of the New York Post's Entertainment section was enough to leave me in stitches.

"Why? The usage today is "African-American." Of course tomorrow, it might be something else. Negro to black to African-American in 3 decades. Ridiculous."
Because "black" is not archaic and "African American" is not fully accepted. "Negro", on the other hand has become archaic - it was too close to a word that was offensive and thus has become outdated.
