Just remember most of the people who opposed Miers were the same who opposed Roberts and oppose everything the Preisdent does. They hate him just as much as the kook left does which is why they sound more and more like them every day.
This is bull.
If he nominates someone like Brown, I assure you, we will all applaud and fight like heck to get her confirmed.
No, you are wrong...from what I read "MOST" who opposed Miers opposed her because she was unqualified and a poor choice. I fully support the president and many things he does, and I did not "hate" Miers. I'm glad she did the right thing.
So stop banging your little spoon on your highchair and lets see if the president will nominate a qualified conservative for this extremely important position.
You mean people like me, who weren't thrilled with Bush's spending, but organized all campaign events for him on my campus last fall because I knew he had said he would nominate judges like Scalia and Thomas? I wasn't excited about Roberts (face it, he's pretty dull), but I happily supported him because he appears reasonably conservative and is so well qualified. And I'll happily support any strict constructionist Bush nominates, since that is the reason I supported him in the first place.
You aren't a conservative, so don't try tell those of us who are how to accomplish our goals.
There's a lot of truth in what you say.
However, if there isn't some compromise by all parties, it is possible that no one will be confirmed, and this selection will be left to the follow-on administration.
"Just remember most of the people who opposed Miers were the same who opposed Roberts and oppose everything the Preisdent does. They hate him just as much as the kook left does which is why they sound more and more like them every day."
Yes, we should all be REAL Conservatives, like YOU.... by supporting the President's open borders policies and left-leaning Judicial appointments! It's all so clear now.
I'm not going to gloat - though I do feel satisfied. I have more respect for Miers now than I did before, because this is the first case I have ever seen of her doing the right thing based on principles.
Can't you just accept that people, even presidents make mistakes? The nomination was a mistake and nobody has to hate the president to realize it.
Who knows, we may just get a conservative judge WITH a track record. Horror of horrors... LOL
Total BS!
"Just remember most of the people who opposed Miers were the same who opposed Roberts and oppose everything the Preisdent does. They hate him just as much as the kook left does which is why they sound more and more like them every day."
So 45% of FR opposed Roberts and only 32% were in favor of him? Interesting. Look most of the strongest opposition to Miers came from people who have worked hard to get this President into office, and to support his agenda. Opposing a President on an issue does not mean you "hate him." That is childish rhetoric and sounds like something a left winger would say.
Most of us on here who opposed Miers are people who naturally will support the President on an issue, who voted for him (and in my case volunteered countless hours for him), and who give him the benifit of the doubt. We felt betrayed by the nomination and felt it to be a huge missed opportunity. He made a mistake and is human. He's lucky enough to get a do-over and if he makes a strong pick, the people who were disapointed in the Miers pick will go to war for him.
I opposed Mires, but I've backed President Bush for years. And I backed Roberts. You're painting with too broad a brush...
That is just plain untrue.
Bush did this to himself. It was an incredibly dumb move.
Most of us were ready to go to war for a conservative nominee. We believe it to be a deadly serious issue. One can hardly go to war on a "trust me" nominee when so many of the "trust me" nominees in the past have gone so terribly wrong.
I donated to Bush and want to see him succeed, particularly in the war on terror. Many voted for Bush on this appointment issue alone.
"Just remember most of the people who opposed Miers were the same who opposed Roberts and oppose everything the Preisdent does. They hate him just as much as the kook left does which is why they sound more and more like them every day."
That is true of some of the punditry - but given time with Roberts, they for the most part let up on their criticism. Also, one should keep in mind that the real criticism was with the stealth approach pursuant to which the outside world purposely doesn't know how the nominee feels about critical subjects. In that sense, opposition to both Roberts and Miers was consistent and rationale (whether one agrees or disagrees substantively) unless you just want to blindly follow.
I supported Roberts but was fairly cool on Miers (apparently a "big government" "get along" world view type). And, I've spent years and money supporting the President. You are wrong.
>> Just remember most of the people who opposed Miers were the same who opposed Roberts and oppose everything the Preisdent does. They hate him just as much as the kook left does which is why they sound more and more like them every day. <<
Bullsh!+. You just keep telling yourselves that so you don't have to listen to anyone. Yes, there were some people (Ann Coulter) who disliked Roberts because he was merely a "stealth" candidate. But his legal brilliance won over most of the skeptics. His approval:disapproval ratings were 61:19; nearly all of the 19% were hard-core leftists.
Compare to Miers. Her ratings were 28:34. That means that 33% of the country supported Roberts but rejected Miers. But no, nearly the entire National Review, Judge Bork, the League of Conservative Women... they all just exist to harrass Bush. Riiiight.
Not true. I adore Roberts and his extraordinary intelligence and he seems firmly grounded as a conservative (albeit not an activist like Scalia).
I was never enthusiastic about Miers; she came across as an Oprah-type. My only consolation is that she might have been a setup all along for someone more openly conservative, but the White House is horrible at politics. If they had much political sense, they would've gone for Janice Rogers Brown in the first place, given that she's got preapproval from the filibuster compromise.
This is very tiresome, and it is obviously untrue. I supported Roberts, and so did most of the people who opposed Miers. Opposition to Roberts by Freepers was mild, and limited. Forty-five percent of the Freepers in this forum said they opposed her in the latest poll, and the number was growing steadily. If the poll had been set a week later, it probably would have been over fifty percent.
Moreover, most of the people who opposed Miers voted for Bush and supported him for the past five years. Nothing that Bush has done in the past five years upset so many of his supporters as the Miers nomination. Thank God he has recognized his mistake.
I have never said that I hated Miers. I have said that I opposed the Miers NOMINATION to the Supreme Court. There is a very big difference. Since she has been good enough to withdraw her candidacy, I sincerely wish her well and am only sorry she was put through such an unpleasant experience. It should never have happened, and I don't fault her for it.
"Just remember most of the people who opposed Miers were the same who opposed Roberts and oppose everything the Preisdent does. They hate him just as much as the kook left does which is why they sound more and more like them every day."
If people opposed Roberts like they did Miers, would he be the chief justice today? No. Second, Roberts was qualified and only his judicial philosophy questionable. Miers lacked BOTH. But anyway...
Nope. Not true. Roberts was incredibly qualified and knowledgeable on Constitutional law. Meiers wasn't. If you're too stupid to see that, well, I guess that's your problem.
