Category Three Major Hurricane Wilma is barreling toward the Southwest Florida coastline. The storm is packing wind speeds of 125mph, moving NW at 20mph, with an enormous eye 65 miles in diameter. Landfall is anticipated shortly in Collier County between 6:00 and 7:00AM ET.

Storm surge flooding of 9 feet to 17 feet is possible along the coast near and to the south of where Wilma makes landfall. Storm surge of 5 to 8 feet is predicted for the Keys. The storm has spawned tornados throughout the Florida peninsula since yesterday evening.

I just talked to my friends in Sunrise. They said it is awful. The condo building across the way from them,the roof blew completely off. An air conditioning unit blew off the roof of another building. A piece of roof fell onto his neighbors car. The pool is filled with chairs that were chained down but were uprooted. They lost power but still have phone service. I'll hear more later.

My sister lives in Lake Placid FL. Does anyone have any word about how that area is faring?

The pool is filled with chairs that were chained down but were uprooted.

They should have just tossed the pool furniture into the pool before the storm. Safest place for it, and they come out sparkling clean.

Wilma Slams South Florida as a Category 3 Hurricane
with a 52 mile wide eye, max sustained winds of 120/Gusts to 150 mph.
Exits South Florida as Category 2, MSW 105/Gusts to 135 mph, little change in eye width.

That is not correct. The max sustained winds are just that - the max in the storm. It is more likely that Wilma was a Cat 3 in the southern eyewall and a borderline Cat1/Cat2 in the northern eyewall.

Because, if this theory was true, the Long Island Express, with 130mph sustained winds, would have actually been a Cat 5 with 190mph winds when the 60mph forward speed was added on. Instead, the 130 mph winds reflected the foward speed.

Hurricane Wilma Tropical Cyclone Update
Statement as of 1:50 PM EDT on October 24, 2005

...Wilma restrengthens to category 3 over the Gulf Stream...

At about 120 PM EDT...an Air Force reconnaissance aircraft reported
that maximum sustained winds in Hurricane Wilma were near 115
mph...in a small region south of the center over the Atlantic Ocean
and the extreme northwestern Bahamas.

A special advisory will be issued by approximately 230 PM EDT...
primarily to revise the initial and forecast intensity.
