Federalist Society Staffers Ready to Lauch 'Coup' on SCOTUS Nominee Harriet Miers
ABC News ^ | 10/13/05 | Mark Halperin

Posted on 10/13/2005 7:25:49 AM PDT by gopwinsin04

On the heels of Federalist Society staffers appearing in the New York Times and Washington Times on Wednesday, a Federalist Society member tells ABC News the following: (this Thursday morning)

'The Federalist Society staffers are ready to lauch a coup. They have started whispering awful things about Harriet Miers.' The staffers are now just reaching the point of wanting to talk on background.' (to the mainstream media about the nominee)

'The whispers started on Monday, but have revved up...They are willing to talk.'

Federalist Society staffers don't get to vote on the nomination of course, but if the whispers get louder from key Administration allies on judical nominations, perhaps some Senators may listen.

That could be ominous.

"Those who "back" her actually back the President. We are standing against the Lynch Mob and asking for a fair hearing without the rumour, lies and innuendo. Leave those tactics to the RATS."

I back the President and oppose her. Is that impossible in your view?

Unless Jeb Bush is going to be president for the next 8 years, I doubt the Ferdealist Society is risking much with this move.

Over 70% on the FR poll are already unsure about this nominee...

They're risking a lot more than they realize. They are rapidly losing the respect and confidence of the rank and file, unless they are attempting to switch to the democrat column. How can you trust the judgement of people who are so knee jerk? They have exposed their agenda. They are not the least interested in an originalist, they are interested in politicizing the bench.

Agreed, no matter how you spin this
It is my opinion that BUSH chose to place Conservatives on the back burner (shame?) and appease Rinos & Democrats

Now I want to also say that Laura shouldn't have agreed with the premise, but she's not a very fierce political animal and can be lulled into a false sense of security by a smiling Lauer. She's rumored to be pro-choice and is probably quite "squishy" on these kinds of things. It wasn't a particularly unfair question by Lauer, it's just that a politico would have had the presence to deflect it.

But Miers' opponents seemed to think these comments were directed squarely at them. This applies to Captain's Quarters (I think that's the one) and Rush especially. They went off the deep end -- maybe looking for a reason to justify the fierceness of their anti-Miers rhetoric.

We all know Lauer has an agenda. He just got lucky and asked an open-ended question to make news, even a blind squirrel finds an acorn every now and then!

No, the message Bush and Miers defenders are sending is that in America you let the person speak for themselves before making a judgement.

If these staffers are saying Miers does not have a right to a hearing, then they are NOT the defenders of the constitution and founding fathers that they have been pretending to be all this time. If this is what they really are, then they can not be trusted as a source for republican presidents and should be passed over.

She did have a couple on the other side, Jay Sekulow for one, I must have missed Jay Sekulow. I do miss parts of her show at times, as work intrudes at time :)

Leonard Leo of the Federalist Society has already given his endorsement of Ms. Miers.

Wrong Number. Please try again.

Senate Judiciary committee Pubbies release statements regarding hearings..

Mr. Sessions (R)Mr. Sessions affirmative…. “My conversations with Harriet Miers indicate that she is a first-rate lawyer and a fine person. Her legal skills are proven and her reputation throughout the legal community is excellent. It is not necessary that she have previous experience as a judge in order to serve on the Supreme Court. It’s perfectly acceptable to nominate outstanding lawyers to that position. I look forward to the confirmation process and to learning more about her judicial philosophy.”

Mr. Cornyn (R) Mr Cornyn…affirmative "The President has announced his nominee to replace Justice Sandra Day O'Connor on the Supreme Court of the United States: Harriet Miers, currently serving as White House Counsel. As he did with Judge John G. Roberts, Jr., the President has chosen an outstanding nominee for our nation's highest court. The Senate should consider this nomination in both a thorough and expedient manner.

"Harriet Miers is a brilliant legal mind. She is a woman of outstanding character who clearly understands what it means to follow the law. She is deeply committed to public service, and has a distinguished history of professional achievement. It is clear that her past experiences have well prepared her for the honor of serving our country as a Supreme Court Justice. I strongly support her nomination.

"It is important that we put aside partisanship, and that the Senate fulfill its constitutional responsibility of advice and consent. This fine nominee must be treated with civility and respect, not as a political pawn. I hope that we in the Senate can move forward in a manner worthy of the American people."

Mr. Coburn (R) Mr.Coburn..affirmative. “Harriet Miers deserves a fair and thorough hearing and confirmation process. I look forward to learning more about her qualifications and judicial philosophy in the coming days,” Dr. Coburn said, adding that he plans to meet with Miers this week.”

We are standing against the Lynch Mob...

Those of us who have doubts are not members of a lynch mob ... or sexist, or elitist, or whatever. You insult your fellow conservatives when you call us names.

What ever happened to the Reagan 11th commandment : Never speak evil of another Republican !

In Reagan's world, most Republicans were conservative.

In Bush's world, most Republicans (like Bush), are liberal.

Reagan's commandment does not work anymore, unless you substitute the word "conservative" for "Republican", and since Bush is not a conservative, the point is moot.

"But that is clearly not all of the opposition. Most opposition is based on a probably incorrect fear that Miers will not be a strict constitutionalist justice, that she will not vote with Scalia and Thomas."

This makes me feel tons better. Thanks. END SARCASM!
