These people are looking for anything. I've even told my mother in birthday cards that she's "the greatest mom ever" which I didn't mean at all. You can't make too much out of something you say to someone in a birthday card. I'm sure she probably meant her comment more than I meant mine but that doesn't mean much.

I believe Kelo will be readdressed as soon as Chief Justice Roberts believes he has a majority of votes. I think he will be quietly discussing this with the Justices that voted for it during this term, and he has such a brilliant mind that I believe his reasoning has the power to shed light on the issue that will cause a rethink by the Court.

Good Post, I have no reason to doubt anybody George W. Bush nominates for the Supreme Court, he has nominated nothing but solid conservative judges, and he has nominated around 300 of them

Can they do that? Don't they need another case before it comes before them again. I saw Sandra Day O'Connor talk about this and she thought it would spawn lots of legislative activity (at the state level anyway) barring such an action taking place. And, indeed, it has. I know of a number of states that having already enacted legislation that would ban the sort of practice that Kelo allows.

No Child Left Behind is our only foot in the door to changing the power of the teachers' unions to brainwash the nation's children.

The testing accountability provision forces them to spend some of their precious socialist/secular/amoral propaganda time "teaching to the test."

And if any child benefits from that and has more ability to make their own way in life as a result, then they may become less dependent on government handouts and more able to see that socialism/secularism/amorality is not good for the country.

Unfortunately, to get it passed it was loaded down with a ton of Kennedy largess.

Exactly. I think of retirement or congratulations for your new job cards that we often pass around at work for signing by everyone.

You know that several of the comments are either over the top or not really meant at all but it is expected of you to say something along those lines.

With Harriet Miers comments I am sure she meant them or at least the sentiment of them and probably if she wrote the card the next week she may have phrased certain sentences slightly different or used different punctuation. Often when we write cards we express the emotion and mood we are currently in be it happy, sad, optimistic or down in the dumps.

Can they do that?

The Justices decide which cases they will take.

They can easily be on the look out for a case and take it if it will give them the opening they need to reverse Kelo.

I feel that she was following protocol by sending Thank you notes to the Governor of Texas...and then personalizing them..

In fact, I think some of the stuff that freepers post on this thread comes closer to being "mushy" stuff than these notes...

Also, notice that half of them were on her Law Firm's stationary, and was transcribed by a secretary...so they certainly wouldn't be misconstued as anything but "business".

BUT, there are those libs, especially the ditzy dem operatives that would like to make this into a "Bush doing a lady friend a favor" thingy...and using these notes as "evidence"....LOL, right!

And I'm remembering all the cards I've signed for people I don't even know, the ones passed around for church group or in class. No one's gonna say, "You're a pretty good governor but I know some better." It was a birthday card! Not a critique of his political career.

I was about to ask the same question as I would have thought for a decision to reversed then an appeal or new case would have to come before the court.

Obviously being English I do not fully understand your system but just thinking of it as a court of appeal/High Court works in the UK I would have thought it must be similar.

We have been unhappy with the quality of your former leader and I will pray a better man will take up your cause.

And you wouldn't expect her to write a critique in a birthday card. In that kind of thing, you're SUPPOSED to write something nice. I would've been stunned if she had written something like "You should really work harder on immigration."

Therein lies the rub. I don't have any qualms with the purpose of the bill, it's the details that disturb me, i.e, federal dollars.

Yes, but according to Sandra Day O'Connor - again from the same seminar I saw - they should only take cases in which there is a conflict in the lower courts. Each Justice votes yeah or nay on every case brought before the court and one of the crition should be a dispute at the appellate court level.

Thanks from a personal perspective I liked and will miss Michael Howard and I think he got a bad press unjustifiably especially in the US where certain things he said and did were taken out of context.

Personally the ones that are standing IMHO cannot hold a candle to him but then I do not know as much about Cameron and Davies as I do Howard. Michael Howard is the MP for Folkestone and Hythe which is only about 8 miles from me in Ashford. My father was actually at the Conservative Party Head Quarters in Hythe and supported him the night he was nominated as prospective MP for Folkestone and Hythe.

I am therefore concerned about this election as with Blair going at the next general election unless the Conservatives really muck up big time we stand a very good chance of getting elected. Cameron seems to be the media acceptable guy as Davies does not seem to have much charisma which unfortunately in this day and age seems to matter more than policies. Davies seems nearer my philosophy though.

Thanks for your prayers they are much appreciated.
