"Women don't have to be but it is the feminist ideal to be encumbered by a husband and children. If she had a child (and didn't put it in a day care) she may not be a SC nominee today but a 'plain old housewife'. I can't tell you how many times career women have pulled me aside and asked me what I'm going to do about my education after I get married."

I am sure you told them you plan to USE your education, that is how you figured out if this "man" was smart enough for you..... (I am only half kidding)

Attended SMU, so that's a plus.

I am just stunned. A Miers nomination is wrong for so many political reasons even without addressing the idealogy or promises to the base.

The Rats mantra over the past weeks have been cronyism given the Brown debacle and the Julie Myers nomination. I was convinced that President Bush would not nominate somone from his inner circle or even from Texas.

This nomination is enough to make even a usual Bush-bot (like me) really question the decision-making process going on in the White House.

She'll get more votes than the more qualified Roberts. The inept Senate will be proud.

Not if my two Republican Senators want to get reelected!

"If she's the one, I have a problem with her association with the TX lotto comm."

I agree. I just can't associate that with social conservatism no matter how hard I try to stretch it.

I don't understand why people think that if Roe/Wade is overturned...that this will end abortion? It will just encourage traveling to other states or countries who do.....why is this the only issue for some people??

Is this nominee a conservative?

The chances are not good. If you were hoping for an actual conservative, well, Bush passed up many we know who fit that mold to choose this woman.

Look at her on TV and tell me she's someone who inspires confidence or hopes for longevity. She looks like she's close to dead already.

This is "one" of the "many" last straws.

2 Words for you: Edith Clement.

That's what we were told the day of the pick by the press, and the press was wrong.

If Bush was trying to avoid controversy, he has failed.

I don't understand what he was trying to do. This makes no sense to me, unless it's that Bush gets one of his good friends in a sweet job. I think he'll have a hard time selling this to his base.

Maybe she hired an illegal alien back in '78 and never did her witholding, so that will bounce her out.

She is from Texas, after all, where illegals abound

In advertising, agencies often give the client executions which they know will be rejected, setting the client up to be more receptive to the concept they REALLY want to sell. Hope this is a similar deal...

She is pro-choice and a close friend and lawyer of Bush's family. That's enough.

How do we know she is pro-choice? Let's see evidence before we make such a claim.

Maybe Bush picked her out of loyalty but knows she will never be confirmed. Perhaps he has someone else in mind but puts this woman out there first to let the dems do their chewing up and spitting out. Then when she doesn't get confirmed, he picks his REAL choice: the dems will look like obstructionists if they go after his second choice. The prez once again beats the dems at their own game. He has kept this ladys friendship, gotten his real choice, and once again pulled one on the dems. Just a thought. (tin foil hat off)

She'll get more votes than the more qualified Roberts.

That speaks to the dishonesty of the DEMs who did not vote to confirm Roberts. If she is qualified for the job, a Senator should vote for the nominee.

Pres. Bush is self-destructing and it's obvious to anyone who is willing to see.

Bush has jumped the shark.
