Racial differences of opinion
Here's an uncomfortable subject: Why do black Americans see some issues so totally differently from the way nonblack Americans see them?
The obvious examples before us are the polls that show large majorities of blacks saying that the Bush administration slowed relief to Katrina victims because so many of them were black, and large majorities of whites saying just the opposite. (Pause for factual note: Most Katrina victims, of course, were white: Orleans Parish has a black majority, but the other Louisiana parishes and the Mississippi and Alabama counties hit by Katrina have white majorities.) Here are results from a USA Today/CNN/Gallup poll conducted September 8 to 11.
Just your best guess, do you think one reason the federal government was slow in rescuing these people was because many of them were black, or was that not a reason?

I am reminded of the polls taken immediately after O.J. Simpson's criminal trial, which showed that a large majority of blacks thought he was not guilty and a larger majority of whites thought he was guilty. At the time, I wondered whether black respondents really believed he had not killed his wife or whether they were just expressing something in the nature of solidarity with him. Looking at results like these, I wonder something similar: Aren't these black respondents just expressing their dislike or even hatred for George W. Bush, rather than embracing the absurd position that the federal government would move slowly to rescue people because many of them—many, not most, as Gallup was careful to ask—were black?

Major Findings of • Police and the justice system are not biased against minorities. Crime Rates • Blacks are seven times more likely than people of other races to commit murder, and eight times more likely to commit robbery. • When blacks commit crimes of violence, they are nearly three times more likely than non-blacks to use a gun, and more than twice as likely to use a knife. • Hispanics commit violent crimes at roughly three times the white rate, and Asians commit violent crimes at about one quarter the white rate. • The single best indicator of violent crime levels in an area is the percentage of the population that is black and Hispanic. When whites commit violent crime, only three percent of their victims are black. • Blacks are an estimated 39 times more likely to commit a violent crime against a white than vice versa, and 136 times more likely to commit robbery. • Blacks are 2.25 times more likely to commit officially-designated hate crimes against whites than vice versa. Gangs • Only 10 percent of youth gang members are white. • Hispanics are 19 times more likely than whites to be members of youth gangs. Blacks are 15 times more likely, and Asians are nine times more likely. Incarceration • Between 1980 and 2003 the US incarceration rate more than tripled, from 139 to 482 per 100,000, and the number of prisoners increased from 320,000 to 1.39 million. • Blacks are seven times more likely to be in prison than whites. Hispanics are three times more likely. |
IMHO, if we had a tiny bit R-E-S-P-E-C-T, to borrow a phrase from that great song by Aretha Franklin, we could at least begin to actually solve some of the racial problems of today.

FReepers are people. Most are white, many are black. So friggin' what? I can't say N....r, but any time one of the brothers wants to cop an attitude, then it is OK.
I have survived almost 58 years. Much of it was spent around navy bases, and military kids. They came in all flavors. I didn't see much racism. I saw kids playing together, like their parents did. Some bigots existed.
In 1963, I returned to NC, and graduated high school in 1965. I went into the Navy 66-68, and went back home.
In the early 70's, all kinds of crap happened in Wilmington, my home. Ben Chavis came to town. Do any of you remember the "Wilmington Ten"?
My boss's brother owned a furniture store, L. Schwartz Furn., located on fourth St. It was burned to the ground, and the W10 were responsible. They were rabble rousers.
Louis Schwartz started business in the early 20's. He would leave home on Monday, before dawn, and travel all week, selling chairs and tables, and pots and pans, on credit. Most of his customers were black. He collected from them monthly.
During the depression, many of those poor blacks came to know the man's goodness. He would load his wagon with food and necessary items weekly, and make his rounds as before. But, many, he KNEW, could never pay for what he took to them. Guys, I have no animosity toward any man, due to his birth color. I do however, have a great animosity to a GROUP who can laud and elevate Ben Chavis to their leadership.

Intolerance is a symptom we must all seem to share. Your color/religion/or whatever difference, you possess, is irrelevant, to most of us. The true bigots, can be ignored. They will eventually go away, when nobody listens, nor responds.
