Racial differences of opinion

Racial differences of opinion

Here's an uncomfortable subject: Why do black Americans see some issues so totally differently from the way nonblack Americans see them?

The obvious examples before us are the polls that show large majorities of blacks saying that the Bush administration slowed relief to Katrina victims because so many of them were black, and large majorities of whites saying just the opposite. (Pause for factual note: Most Katrina victims, of course, were white: Orleans Parish has a black majority, but the other Louisiana parishes and the Mississippi and Alabama counties hit by Katrina have white majorities.) Here are results from a USA Today/CNN/Gallup poll conducted September 8 to 11.

Just your best guess, do you think one reason the federal government was slow in rescuing these people was because many of them were black, or was that not a reason?

(snip)---((table did not reproduce well))

I am reminded of the polls taken immediately after O.J. Simpson's criminal trial, which showed that a large majority of blacks thought he was not guilty and a larger majority of whites thought he was guilty. At the time, I wondered whether black respondents really believed he had not killed his wife or whether they were just expressing something in the nature of solidarity with him. Looking at results like these, I wonder something similar: Aren't these black respondents just expressing their dislike or even hatred for George W. Bush, rather than embracing the absurd position that the federal government would move slowly to rescue people because many of them—many, not most, as Gallup was careful to ask—were black?

"I don't have to respect anyone's opinion, just like you don't have to respect mine."

I see it now.

According to that statement above of yours, everyone is entitled to an opinion, but not every opinion is worthy of respect.

I was thought by my parents to respect every opinion even if it differed from mine. Times sure are a-changing!

rdb3 told me there was such a site. I hadn't know that before. I don't follow racist crap like that.

Life's too short to carry that chip on your shoulder.

I see making statements about whites and whites attitudes is not making general statements but making statistical statements about blacks is. Uh-huh

I have a hard time believing that. If that's the case, why is there so much more crime in places like Detroit instead of its white burbs?

I don't think the quote is accurate. IIRC, something like 80% of violent crime is white-on-white and black-on-black. This is because most crimes are committed by friends/relatives/neighbors, ie. people near the victim. Random violent crime (that committed by strangers) is skewed towards black-on-white.

Then define a white attitude......it would be, again, be a generalization. And not all white people would be categorized as such.

I can attest to that too.

I've been called worse names by blacks too. I usually ignore them if in a public place rather than starting an argument, though. If in a private, one-on-one place, however, I'll deal with it and don't let them get away with it w/o giving them an experience they'll remember the rest of their lives.

it is an irrelevent argument. As I said in my last reply to rdb3, it's not fair but that's just the way people are. You can either let it make angry and go homicidal or develope an ulcer, or you can just shake your head and thank God that you are not that small a person.

Either way complaining about it does no good. It is up to the members of that community who do care about right and wrong to stand up and lead. It is up to them to show where Jesse and Mfumi, and Farakan are wrong. Take issue with Maxine Waters when she bad mouths President Bush. Write John Conyers a letter conveying disagreement with his campaign of hatred against Bush.

Otherwise your just wasting oxygen.

It is the deafening silence by conservative blacks which condemns them. Just as it has been the silence of the anti-al Qaeda arabs which condemns them.

the answer is no, but it is also irrelevent.

Why do you consider it "irrelevant"?

Are you saying that conservative black people don't say anything about Louis Farrakhan and Jesse Jackson?

Another trend I would like to se stopped are these"color of crime"so called"statistics"that on the surface seem,at least to some,to be just objective numbers from government sources.
Maybe I'm a little paranoid or hang out with too many liberals at work but do you get the impression sometimes that these"color of crime"quoters are not just aiming their barbs at real black criminals but use these figures to take a potshot at the millions upon millions of law abiding black folk as well?
Can't PROVE that assertion but I get this funny feeling that there are a few on this board that have more than a passing interest in bashing those of a darker hue.

That's nonsense. I guess you haven't listen to or read Larry Elder's (conservative/libertarian)columns. I guess you've never read Dr. Thomas Sowell's articles or books. I guess Dr. Walter E. Williams has slipped by you. Each of these gentlemen have loudly condemned criminal behavior that occurs far too frequently within the inner-cities.

Blogger and FReeper Bob Parks (bocopar) has written about it and loudly condemned it. mhking and I have condemned it (for full disclosure, mhking is a conservative while I am not). In fact, I've stated several times that if it were up to me, I'd execute every one who shot at rescuers in New Orleans, or raped someone, myself. I'd so it free of charge and save John Q. Taxpayer some money.

I see you've had your hands full while I've been out on my Saturday night. I used to get the same thing on illegal immigration threads even after I made it clear that I was against illegal immigration "Well, then, you should be screaming the loudest, HR, blah blah blah...."
Why? I'm not one of them. They don't represent who I am. Why should I be any more vocal than the next guy? I'm already pretty vocal....what to do then, get a tattoo on my forehead and buy advertising during the Super Bowl? I'll need a salary advance.....

You're not paranoid. You should be slapped on the wrist for committing the cardinal sin of stating the obvious! ;-)

You're right. On the political right, we have a lot of people like Jared Taylor, Peter Brimelow (VDARE), and Steve Sailor (who is a friend of Michelle Malkin's), by the way) who will pull these stats out at the drop of a hat.
