Racial differences of opinion

Racial differences of opinion

Here's an uncomfortable subject: Why do black Americans see some issues so totally differently from the way nonblack Americans see them?

The obvious examples before us are the polls that show large majorities of blacks saying that the Bush administration slowed relief to Katrina victims because so many of them were black, and large majorities of whites saying just the opposite. (Pause for factual note: Most Katrina victims, of course, were white: Orleans Parish has a black majority, but the other Louisiana parishes and the Mississippi and Alabama counties hit by Katrina have white majorities.) Here are results from a USA Today/CNN/Gallup poll conducted September 8 to 11.

Just your best guess, do you think one reason the federal government was slow in rescuing these people was because many of them were black, or was that not a reason?

(snip)---((table did not reproduce well))

I am reminded of the polls taken immediately after O.J. Simpson's criminal trial, which showed that a large majority of blacks thought he was not guilty and a larger majority of whites thought he was guilty. At the time, I wondered whether black respondents really believed he had not killed his wife or whether they were just expressing something in the nature of solidarity with him. Looking at results like these, I wonder something similar: Aren't these black respondents just expressing their dislike or even hatred for George W. Bush, rather than embracing the absurd position that the federal government would move slowly to rescue people because many of them—many, not most, as Gallup was careful to ask—were black?

Glad you liked it.
I think a lot of folks around here

Unfortunately, there are a few here who "just don't get it," who somehow consider the maintenance and defense of that legacy of inequality a "conservative" position...

That sums it up quite nicely.

" Of course he gets it. "It" has been made quite clear to us all, on this and other recent threads. "

I guess the Article in discussion here gets right to the heart of the matter. We do see things differently. I see numerous folks in a heart felt way trying their best to explain their opinions of racial relations, to reach out in understand and all they get for their efforts is more of the same. They are constantly belittled, and called racists.

Maybe I should have said, "You just don't see it" instead of , "You just don't get it" but I doubt it would have made a difference.

Instead of an honest sharing of experiences, feelings and ideas, we get a disconnect that doesn't seem likely to be overcome. That I guess is just the way it is...

The only racism that I see is the racism coming from the black leaders , who have claimed everything from blowing up levees to slow response because of skin color . I believe that it is the black leadership that is racist not the administration

OK, so you think the blade comment in response to the "I have removed my sword from its sheath" stinks, but you think the "I have removed my sword from its sheath" comment is pretty neat. Duly noted.

I honestly don't understand how you could read what I wrote and draw the conclusion that I was defending Jim Crow. Can anyone help me to see this connection?

As a white woman, it seemed like you were defending it to me.

Does it now? I do believe that is the first indication of an actual "opinion" from you I have witnessed.

So when your fellow freepers contradict the race baiter's on their claims of racism in the Katrina response, evacuation and support you feel like Mr. Umbagi that they are only "maintaining and defending a legacy of inequality".

Well, it's nice to finally hear your opinion. How about kindly allowing me to disagree without implying that I am a racist.

What I saw was many white faces rescuing fellow Americans. I saw 6 white guys wading in waist deep water all pushing a bass boat with one older black lady in it. I saw hundreds and hundreds of white volunteers in states all across the nation giving up their time and money to help thousands of black evacuees. Then I see some hateful democrats and black leaders who while the rescues are still ongoing start their race baiting crap. When in fact they are the reason for the “legacy of inequality”. Like I said above, the author of this article is right on.

Thank you for responding; please accept my apologies for yourself and for any others who may have been offended by what I said. It was never my intention to defend those reprehensible events, those events and that period stands with the genocide of the American Indian as the very worst in the history of our nation.

No, not at all.

Listen, man. I'm going to explain this to you in no uncertain terms. Hopefully you'll even print this out for future reference.

The problem that American black FReepers like myself and mhking have is simply this: going against the professional race-baiters is one thing, while casting their motivations on all American blacks is another.

Far too much of the latter has been occuring on these threads since Hurrican Katrina struck. We are all not alike, therefore, people need to cut out using one black "leader" or the actions of a few black people as accurate descritions of ALL black people.

That nonsense needs to stop.

There's nothing more I can say.

I haven't seen any examples of the above; I haven't been looking for it either, so I will take your word for it that it is on here somewhere. Likewise, how about giving the rest of us who raise these issues the benefit of doubt that we have good intentions at heart.

There is nothing more I can say on the matter either except to say that you misspelled description.

Blacks commit more violent crime against whites than against blacks.

I have a hard time believing that. If that's the case, why is there so much more crime in places like Detroit instead of its white burbs?

Actually there is a NAAWP. It is, or was headed by David Duke.

And as far as I'm concerned, the NAACP and David Duke is the same exact thing, and Louis Farrakahn is no different than Robert Miles was.

Sorry, I wouldn't have any idea. I would encourage you visit the website and maybe even research the numbers from a different source. I visited the site and checked on the author's credentials. He has also made several appearances on national TV according (they are listed) to his website. Based on this, I decide that it would be appropriate to post.

I'm looking for good stats(Checked MSP, not FBI yet), but I'm fairly certain that most crimes by percentage is within races. Black on black, white on white.

Did you see any black Americans helping to rescue people at all? I did. There are some stories out there about black people assisting in the rescue.

I read one not too long ago about a black man in a boat without a motor or paddles; he was using one 2x4 and it took him hours to get to people, yet he kept paddling that boat from sunup to sundown. Unlike Sean Penn, he did not have a personal photographer.

There were stories about black men with families that kept them safe and kept the order for large groups of people until the rescuers came.

There were stories about thug looking black men waving out rescue boats and actually wading through the toxic waters to hoist women and children onto the rescue boats. These men got all of the women and children out and had to spend an additional night out there because it got too dark to attempt a rescue for them. There will be plenty more stories, start searching for them.

There were plenty of National Guard, Police, Doctors, Nurses, Firemen, etc. that were of different races. This was not a white rescue by any stretch of the imagination.

You tend to want to put everyone in a group and that is the problem. If you have a problem with a black person, stick to that person only and quit inflecting that persons actions on an entire race.

Just as there are good and decent white people, there are just as many black people.

It is so good to see you back. A lot of posters, it seems, could use your expertise and knowledge.

Don't give up an inch. They will either learn a little bit or be a little more obtuse on their generalizations.
