Katrina Live Thread, Part X
Various ^ | 30 August 2005

Posted on 08/30/2005 6:51:27 AM PDT by NautiNurse

Catastrophic damage occurred to Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama as a result of Hurricane Katrina. Major bridges are destroyed. Mobile AL suffered its worst flooding in 90 years. In New Orleans, a large section of concrete levee broke last night. Water continues to rise, threatening, among many things, Tulane Hospital with 1000 patients. New Orleans officials: Do not attempt to return to the city at this time if you evacuated. It is too dangerous.

If the President of the United States had to call me to tell me to issue evacuation orders, I'd be ashamed.

Do we know this is a fact?

On SUnday when the mandatory evac was announced, Governor Blanco of LA made sure to say that the President urged her and the Mayor to order the evacuation. I was thinking at the time that if this storm didn't live up to the hype they could pin the evacation order on Bush.

Another poster on this long thread posted that she had read that someone from FEMA or Homeland Security called up the chain to get the President because he couldn't make any progress on the mandatory evacuations on his own with the Gov and the Mayor.

No links though but I have even heard it reported on CNN

I am more determined than ever to take it. Laissez les bon temps rouler!

Great news! Hope it's closer to the end of the year, though. It will take months to get cleaned up. I've been wanting to go back for years, now. Spent two days there ten years ago and loved it.

I wouldn't go to a major city that doesn't have a plan in place to get me out

Dirt ... let me know when you're coming to Houston, I'll be glad to assist in getting you the hell back out.

Did I just hear the Gov of Louisiana say that it is "just lake water" in New Orleans now? Is that as stupid as it sounds?

Which lake? Lake Erie?

Well, the problem with a circular levee system is if it gets breached, it becomes a dam that keeps water from leaving. And the pumps are worthless until the levee integrity is restored.

well there is some dispute in that. I heard a reporter say that it's a misunderstanding, that the President had to do that as a formality, the process. We don't really know for sure the chain of events.

This is certainly a huge event. I'm trying to get my mind wrapped around the tragedy.

People are reacting in different ways, and we are reading posts that would normally trigger a disagreement resolved in a few posts through raw emotioned eyes.

I think all of us are seeing things a little more differently, with more raw emotion perhaps, and are lashing out a little bit more than usual out of frustration.

I know I would like to be doing more. Our office in Dallas will probably need to pick up some of the slack from our NOLA office. I have offered my home to any of my NOLA co-workers that may need a place to stay and access to a company resources so that they can be productive and until our NOLA office opens. Beyond that, plus a modest donation or two, I can't do too much more and I am sick at heart and frustrated over that.

Maybe we all need to give the people in the area a break and give each other a break.
