Katrina Live Thread, Part X
Various ^ | 30 August 2005

Posted on 08/30/2005 6:51:27 AM PDT by NautiNurse

Catastrophic damage occurred to Mississippi, Louisiana and Alabama as a result of Hurricane Katrina. Major bridges are destroyed. Mobile AL suffered its worst flooding in 90 years. In New Orleans, a large section of concrete levee broke last night. Water continues to rise, threatening, among many things, Tulane Hospital with 1000 patients. New Orleans officials: Do not attempt to return to the city at this time if you evacuated. It is too dangerous.

I agree.

These people just do not realize that life as they knew it is over.

Also, much of the 'fill' is already there in the form of structures which will be demolished.

the passenger cruise ships could go to that area, and they could maybe get boats or helicopters and transfer people to them

The cruise ships already come with their own tender craft. You could pick up 2,500 people at a shot with one of those big boys.

The only news aired locally on the Las Vegas based casinos impacted by Katrina refer to losses the casinos would have per day...makes me sick. On a lighter note, the Harrah's owned casinos will continue to pay employees while they are closed. Still too early for them to make damage assessments, of course. I just pray for the people...

Okay. Touche. I still think if this storm was a bit more to the west all this would have happened yesterday morning during the storm -- and even worse. I never meant to suggest to you or anyone elsae that I thought they got by unscathed.

Jeanne Meserve; Rick Sanchez was replaying a clip of Jeanne talking to Aaron Brown.

It was just heartbreaking.

MSNBC reporting that a large Red Cross convoy is now en route from Little Rock, Arkansas to Alexandria, Louisiana transporting various relief supplies -- including mosquito repellent. Hallelujah!

As I've heard it, the industrialization of the Mississippi cut down on the amount of silt it deposits south of NO. After 100 years, normal ocean erosion has reduced the wetlands...and the lack of silt meant that it didn't get replenished.

When I was a kid in school during the '60s and early '70s, I remember the environmentalists complaining about silt killing wildlife downstream. Now their complaining that we didn't allow silt to naturally rebuild the wetlands. Can't win.

ON Fox right now, they are showing the Coast Guard lowering on to rooftops and picking up people---and the wind is strong...

We need to pray for these Coast Guard people also, for what they are doing...there are like 6 people on ONE roof..just the roof is showing. Dang...how many trips this one helicopter will have to make for ONE HOUSE full of people!

In one week they can go back to get clothing and essensals. Then they must leave again and cannot come back for a month.

Just as we thought: worst possible case scenario.

Here is the most useful map on the net. Click on the map with the pink on it, towards the bottom. The pink is the area below sea level, and the dark pink is more than 5 feet below sea level. Since this map was made, the area may have settled a bit. It appears so, since the water seems more than 10 feet deep in places.

Let's be realistic. It is not a nasty stereotype to say that many of those in the SuperDome could be of the persuasion to partake in that sort of thing as a normal course of their life.

I can only begin to imagine how happy those people feel right now - they have been up there for close to 24 hours!

Heh. I had been feeling...unsettled. My doc said these things were usually "self-limiting." After a couple of weeks, when there seemed to be no limit, I called him up for a second visit. He said "Where have you been--you've got Giardia." "What is it, and why didn't you call?"
