Hurricane Katrina, Live Thread, Part V
NHC - NOAA ^ | 28 August 2005 | NHC - NOAA

Posted on 08/28/2005 9:35:34 AM PDT by NautiNurse

Extremely dangerous Hurricane Katrina is bearing down on the North Central Gulf of Mexico. Mandatory evacuation of New Orleans is finally underway. Louisiana officials are warning of complete failure to levy systems, and pleading with people to leave low lying areas. For those who choose to stay, they are recommending picks and axes for breaking through to access their roofs during flooding.

Due to the size and intensity of this storm, all interests in the North Gulf of Mexico should be rushing hurricane preparations to completion.

Fox reporter just said they would be riding out the hurricane inside the Dome.

I wonder if they drew the short straws or volunteered?

Yeah, it was a catagory 1 when it crossed Florida and killed 5, knocked out electricity for millions and did a billion dollars damage...a CAT. ONE, 1!!!!

I think NO would take that anyday. Being able to predict where its going seems to be improving but certainly not foolproof. This one is REALLY scary and I'm in LA.

Los Angeles, that is.

If I were in that dome, I would stay in the cinderblock bathrooms...even though it will stink to high heaven...

hopefully its built better than the Kingdome was....but I suspect the roof will fall onto the field.....

I've been watching the eye pretty closely and it doesn't look like it's going to close. It looks like it's going to close up, or gets ragged, and then flares back up to a nice tight circle. Is there anything to this annular thing that indicated there will be no ERC?

PS. It would be the same type of effect that did in Galveston in 1900.

"Reports of post-storm help massing in region, but how do they get to NO? The city is surrounded by
bridges, LOTS of bridges. Remember I-10 in Pensacola Bay? The odds are great that many bridges &
causeways will fail, severely limiting access to the area."

A military sealift command Ro-Ro would be nice to have online.

If not direct, very very close.

Close enough, anyway.

I'm close to you - I'm directly east of Houston.

I remember one of the recent hurricanes when hotels as far north as HSV and Tupelo were full. I am learning more from a NO station than Fox, Etc.

I hate to admit it, but Fidel Castro did a better job of evacuating his poor and elderly to high ground during the last hurricane down there.

Well at least Castro said he did :^)

Listen, we've been on this thread for over a week; we're not posting crap here -- and those of us who have been involved in these threads know janet's work, and not just on this web site.

Thank you for this post. I have been 'steaming' over the attitudes expressed toward Janet but was unable to post anything that was polite enough to pass the mods. J. has been giving top notch info. right along.

True. I am sick to my stomach thinking of what is about to transpire in NO. And no one can do a darn thing about it.
