LOL!! Bush threw everyone off! It isn't a woman and it isn't a minority. This is a fabulous pick. Constitutionalist. Solid. Blocked by Democrats for years for the District court. Much symbolism.
I wouldn't be so quick to celebrate. Bush nominated a white for this pick, which means it is a virtual certainty that a non-white will be picked to replace Rhenquist. So say hello to Chief Justice Alberto Gonzalez.
If this is the case, I was way off the scent trail....thinking he would nominate a female. Oh well, this should be a slam dunk for conservatives.
This is fantastisc news! Watch for Ted Kennedy and Boxer to start imploding!
I love this because I was getting really sick of the prevalent idea that O'Connor could only be replaced with a woman or minority nominee. I would have been very happy with SOME of the other nominees mentioned, but I respect the President more than ever for saying emphatically "I'm going to pick the PERSON, regardless of skin color or genitalia, who I think will make the best SCOTUS justice."
Roberts sounds like an outstanding pick, but the Ds and their pack of rabid jackals will try hard to brutalize the upcoming confirmation battle. They must be crushed and humiliated - and if they want to lose the filibuster option forever, so be it!!!
I was fooled. I was sure it was gonna be a woman. Not that I have anything against a woman, I just hate the sense of inevitability that our culture now attaches to the "diversity" game. Ie: since it was O'Connor's seat, it had to go to a woman. Props to Team Bush.
Yes, I am more satisfied with this pick than I would have been with Judge Clement, only because there just wasn't sufficient information about her judicial philosophy (and given the fact that there were "better", i.e. known originalists, to choose from.) According to what I've been able to read, Judge Roberts seems to be an originalist, which is all many of us wanted (and expected). By the way.....that sound you just heard was the Gang of 7 RINOs fainting now that they may have to put their money where their mouths are. One of the interesting things to watch will be Senator Specter's handling and questioning of the nomination, I think. I am also heartened that the President decided not to play it safe. The battle for these nominations was going to come at some point. Better to get it over with on the first nominee.....once dealt with, it will make the selection of originalists to fill any additional SCOTUS nominees all that much easier.
I almost wonder if Bush intentionally had Clement's name leaked to screw with the MSM...
Anyone besides me notice that W had a hard time keeping a straight face? He wanted to smile so badly! Once it seemed he was fighting laughter!
