Top Dog Why Americans love Labrador retrievers.

Not too long ago, Labrador retrievers were considered a tad exotic. In the 1950s, the sporty mid-size breed was a suburban rarity, popular mainly among upper-crust Anglophiles who liked the idea of owning a dignified hunting dog. Today, however, Labs are the Levi's jeans of purebred dogs. They've topped the American Kennel Club's list of registered canines for 12 years straight. And not just topped, but dominated: The number of registered Labs is nearly three times the number of golden retrievers, the second most popular dog on the list

Belgian Terv. Cross between my 2 favorite breeds. ;-) Just like the perfect Shepherd-Collie mix. IMO. :-D

'Cats rule..dogs drool'
"Drool is cool" if it's from an English Mastiff like our Moses. I wouldn't trade him for any other breed in the world.

My basenji not only hates baths, but he simply refuses to go outside even if there is the slightest bit of precipitation. He'll just hold it all day. I've been known to take him outside holding the umbrella over him. Luckily, basenjis only need a few baths a year! (They're considered an odorless dog.)He takes great joy in rolling in my damp bathtowel, though.

Labradoodles are not french. The germans bred Standard poodles for retrieving (poodle=pudel=puddle). These are NOT the french sissified, little, trebling, lap warmers. Tis is a Labradoodle.

Yah, me too. Had to put mine down Oct. 28, 2003. I'm still grieving.

Ain't that the truth! All I see lately is FAT dogs. Shows how American spoil dogs rotten here. They're not trained, and they eat anything and everything, all the time.

My husband's uncle loves English Springers - and spoils them. His dog is 105 lbs! FAAAATTTTT as ALL get out! (So was 1 of my friend's Dachshunds - ridiculous, and dangerous.)

Then the "dog-loving" ignorant people have the NERVE to tell me my GS looks "thin" - damn right! She is her PROPER weight! That English Springer should be less weighty than my smallish Shepherd!

"There are plenty around to love."
Absolutely, and if people would go to their local shelters instead of these pet shops then many of these puppy mills would decline and go out of business...there's too much inbreeding now...just look at the Irish Setter, there has been so much inbreeding that the dogs are STUPID!(and I love the breed! LOL)

I agree with you, the number of ads for purebred dogs is crazy when thousands of animals are being killed in every city each year.

Those little high set triangle ears came from somewhere... Looked initially terrier to me, but they aren't unlike a greyhound either.

We had a black lab mix named Claudius. He was the gentlest, sweetest dog; we had two children after we adopted Claudius, and he happily endured all the curious poking and pulling our kids did as babies. But he was still *my* dog--my son could tell him to sit, but Claudius didn't listen, only when I told him to sit.

And he was so sensitive! When I was sad, he would come over and put his head on my lap. He had the sweetest brown eyes.

He moved with us from Denver to Canada and absolutely loved the forest in the neighboring plot of land. He ran around like crazy and I swear, he looked like he was smiling.

But last summer, at the age of thirteen, he couldn't walk anymore, he lost control of his hind legs, and was "knuckling under," i.e., walking on the tops of his back paws. It was heartbreaking.

I held him in my arms last summer while the vet administered the shot. I felt that I owed him that much.

Okay I'm starting to cry. :)

"She was very sweet but drool is the reason I would never have another one."

Man you aren't kidding. We had to paint the house after we got rid of our bloodhound. They can shake their heads and send drool 50 feet if they feel like it.

They were Called Bloodhounds because only those of royal blood could own in in the early centuries - makes you wonder what the castles looked like.

You'll like this - when I was into dogs way back, and my sister wanted to get a dog, she checked out my stuff and thought she'd like a Bichon. I knew of them but never heard any1 TALK about them. So, when she tried to call a breeder, she did what I said and asked about getting a

BITCHIN' FREEZE

ROFL! Well the breeder didn't like that too much!

Anyway, Sis ended up getting a German Shepherd. Just like me. ;-D

Labs vs Goldens

Having owned both, I'll go with Goldens any day. Far more entertaining, and if you want to teach a Golden a certain behavior, laugh whenever they do it. They love to entertain, and once they get a laugh, they'll repeat it.

Hahahahahahaha.
