SCOTLAND YARD believes it has thwarted an Al-Qaeda gas attack aimed at ministers and MPs in parliament. The plot, hatched last year, is understood to have been discovered in coded e-mails on computers seized from terror suspects in Britain and Pakistan.

Police and MI5 then identified an Al-Qaeda cell that had carried out extensive research and video-recorded reconnaissance missions in preparation for the attack.

The encrypted e-mails are said to have been decoded with the help of an Al-Qaeda “supergrass”. By revealing the terrorists’ code he was also able to help MI5 and GCHQ, the government’s eavesdropping centre at Cheltenham, to crack several more plots.

The discovery of the suspected Commons nerve gas plot was behind the decision to increase security around parliament this summer.

ISLAMIC terrorists based in Britain and controlled by Osama bin Laden planned a devastating attack in February on the European Parliament building in Strasbourg.

Osama bin Laden: may have as many as 5,000 supporters among young Muslims in Britain

A six-strong terror cell funded by the Saudi fugitive planned to kill all 625 Euro-MPs, and scores of officials, by releasing sarin gas into the parliament building.

The attack was scheduled to take place during the session of parliament from February 11 to 14 this year (2001) and was to be the first in a series of assaults against prominent buildings across Europe. Algerian terrorists based in London and funded directly by bin Laden worked with counterparts in Milan and Frankfurt.

The plot was foiled after German police smashed the Frankfurt operation in a series of raids. The British-based six men were arrested and charged with offences under the Prevention of Terrorism Act.

Al-Qaida link to London blasts in Iraq

Small world alert from UPI, with thanks to Shaun:

MOSUL, Iraq, Sept. 4 (UPI) -- A man captured in August north of al-Qaim, Iraq, had a computer "thumb drive" that contained planning information about the July 7 London suicide bombings, a U.S. military officer has revealed.
Col. Robert Brown, commander of the 1st Brigade 25th Infantry Division in Mosul told United Press International the man was connected to the al-Qaida terrorist network.

He declined to discuss the specific nature of the information on the small computer drive, variants of which store between 8 and 256 megabytes of data, but said it indicated al-Qaida involvement in the attacks on London's bus and subway system.

The drive is the latest piece of information linking the al-Qaida leadership to the bombings, in which four British Moslems killed themselves and 52 others.

ARTICLE SNIPPET: "Three of the July 7 bombers took part in a "dummy run" of the attacks two weeks before carrying out the atrocity.

Police have released CCTV footage of the men as they staged a reconnaissance mission on the capital's transport network on June 28.

Evidence of the dummy run will provide further weight to the theory that all four had planned to detonate their rucksack bombs on the underground.

It is thought that the bus bomber, Hasib Hussain, was prevented from getting in the Northern Line on the day of the attacks because of disruption to the service."

Their devastating rucksack devices had been manufactured in a sophisticated "bomb factory" at a flat in Leeds. Detectives said they had also left two more "ready to go" nail-encased peroxide bombs in a car at Luton station."

CARDIFF, Wales - British foreign policy played a role in motivating the July 7 London bombings, the singer formerly known as Cat Stevens said Tuesday.


Yusuf Islam, who had a string of pop hits in the 1960s and '70s, said an al-Qaida video claiming responsibility for the attacks and linking them to Britain's role in the Middle East showed foreign policy "was not the only factor but it was a major contributory."


"At the same time we have to look at how the teaching of Islam has been distorted," he added.


Speaking at the opening of Cardiff University's Centre for the Study of Islam in the U.K., Islam said schools should teach young Muslims the true meaning of Islam to keep them away from extremist ideas.


"Right now there is a more vital role for education to play in painting a truer picture of Islam," he said. "If you don't give it to the children in schools, anybody can give it to them on the streets or outside the normal environment for learning."
