Feds arrest workers at N.C. air base

Associated Press

RALEIGH, N.C. - Federal authorities arrested workers at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base on Wednesday on immigration charges, a spokeswoman said.

Sue Brown, spokeswoman for the U.S. Bureau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement in Atlanta, confirmed that people were arrested but said she did not yet know how many because they were still being processed.

"There was an operation at Seymour Johnson Air Force base, and there were some arrests made," Brown said. "How many, I'm not really sure yet."

WRAL-TV in Raleigh reported that 50 to 60 people were arrested, citing the U.S. Attorney's Office.

The base is located in Goldsboro, about 50 miles southeast of Raleigh.

She said she did not yet know the nationalities of those arrested.

The U.S. Attorney's Office in Raleigh did not immediately return a phone call seeking comment, while a spokesman for Seymour Johnson said he expected to release a statement later Wednesday.

'Hardworking' Iranian, Chinese or North Korean 'immigrants', 'doing work Americans won't do', I'm sure.

Had to be the first to say it...

Most likely these are Mexican construction workers. INS will visit job sites in the Carolinas with a couple of empty busses and cart of the illegals. They did this a few years back when the big mall complex was under construction by the speedway in Charlotte. A customer of mine who was working on the project (NOT using illegals) said that 80 guys were loaded into busses and taken away.

SEYMOUR JOHNSON AIR FORCE BASE -- Dozens of illegal immigrants who were caught working at one of North Carolina's military bases are behind bars.

Authorities say at least 50 (sic) illegal immigrants were picked
up Wednesday at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base.

Forty-nine undocumented workers were arrested at Seymour Johnston Air Force Base Wednesday morning. WRAL has learned they were working on the base when it was discovered that they did not have the proper paperwork.

The operation was conducted with the cooperation of the Defense Criminal Investigation Service, Bureau of Immigrations and Customs Enforcement, the Social Security Administration, U.S. Marshals Service, Goldsboro Police Department and 4th Security Forces Squadron.

WRAL has learned that some of the workers worked for subcontractors of Parsons Evergreene, LLC out of Salt Lake City. The company has contracts at 19 Air Force bases, building homes, infrastructure and security systems.

Federal immigration agents brought the group to an immigration office in Cary. They will be arraigned in federal court in Raleigh or Greenville depending on where judges are available.

The workers were hired under local contracting agreements to provide construction services.

An INS representative out of Atlanta told WRAL that she is still waiting for her agents in the field to give her all the specifics.

They probably just did a coordinated sweep for illegals as well as people with outstanding warrants.

Neither of whom ought to be working on a military installation.

But...we're undergoing the renovation of family quarters here on Ft. Huachuca, and the work is contracted out. Who's to say all of the employees are legal or have clean records?

The same way 600 illegal East Europeans got into Wal-Mart stores. The work is contracted out and some level of trust has to be assumed. Bad word, but that's what it comes down to.

I agree, the folks who knowingly hired the illegals should pay dearly for their lawbreaking ways.

The INS could do the same thing at any of the large, volume builder subdivisons most anywhere in NC.
