(AP/Ipsos) Poll: Majority says war in Iraq a mistake
Bakersfield Californian ^ | 6/24/05 | AP

Just over half of Americans, 53 percent, now say the war in Iraq was a mistake - the highest percentage to say that in AP-Ipsos polling since December 2003, when two-thirds said the war in Iraq was the right thing to do.

The poll taken earlier this week also found that almost six in 10 disapprove of the Bush administration's conduct of the war, but about the same number say they would prefer keeping troops until the situation is stable instead of immediately withdrawing them from Iraq. Some other findings:

-Who most favors the war: Suburban men, Republicans.

-Who is most opposed: Those 65 and older, people living in urban areas, unmarried women, those who make less than $25,000 a year, Catholics and Democrats.

-War's conduct: Almost six in 10, 56 percent, said they don't approve of the way the Bush administration has conducted the war in Iraq, with 41 percent approving. Four of five Republicans, 79 percent, approved, while more than four of five Democrats, 84 percent disapprove.

-No hasty retreat: Given the choice of keeping troops in until the situation has stabilized or bringing troops home immediately, six in 10 said they want troops to stay and help stabilize Iraq. The percentage of people who want troops to come home immediately has increased to 37 percent, up from 28 percent in November.

The findings on the Iraq war come from a poll of 1,000 adults conducted June 20-22 for The Associated Press by Ipsos, an international polling firm. The margin of sampling error was plus or minus 3 percentage points, larger for subgroups.

These polsters might as well be working for the Terrorist. What would they have us do? Nothing? We would have chemical, biological and suicide bombs going off in our streets, if these leftist had control of our retaliation after 911. Karl Rove was dead on.

I stand corrected. Mrs. Pepper.

And, please, call me Warchild, not an abbreviation. Only my daddy can call me by an abbreviation.

I'm a granduncle, and have been married going on 20 years. I've been voting since that loser Carter. That's all the clues.

Let me ask you something. I've seen you claim that you don't want anyone to know where you graduated from because of stalkers and you don' want to just straight out say your age.

(yes, I can figure out your age well enough)

Yet you say you want to be published.

Are you planning to write fiction or use a nom de plume?

I'm working on treatments for three history books, nonfiction. I have an agent I met through one of my dissertation advisors (who has had several books published, one a near best-seller--that's a good clue as to my academic origins), and he's put me in touch with the appropriate editor, to whom I showed my detailed ideas. I'm at the stage where I'm detailing outlines and preparing sample paragraphs. That's a loooonnng way from publishing.

I'm going to use my own name on my books. It's an ego thing: I've wanted to see my photo on the back cover of one of my books since I was a teenager. Just never thought it would take this long to get this far.

Then what are you afraid of here? Telling us where you went to school doesn't violate your privacy. It gives us no clue to your identity. Besides we have many, many authors on FR.

If you aren't able to self promote, you won't get far.

No comment is necessary. I'm actually a bit bored with this discussion and I'm about to log off.

I went to grad school at:

1. Duke
2. UNC Chapel HIll (where's there's a good war/peace program), or
3. Wake Forest U

And it wasn't #3.

Considering the constant, never-ending mainstream media barrage of "bad news" out of Iraq, I think 47-percent solid support of the Iraq war as pretty good.

Furthermore, I would like to read the questions AND hear the inflection of the poll questioner's voice BEFORE I even gave it any credibility.

As a reporter myself for 10 years, I used to marvel at my own ability to make my interviewee say just about anything I wanted him or her to say.

All you have to do is continue to ask the specific question in a variety of ways, and eventually the person will play 'devil's advocate' with him or herself.
