If NK had a brain they would open their Southern border and say have at it to all their hungry, poor, criminal, sick and unwanted citizens. In less than 10 years they would own SK!

There are two worlds in North Korea: One is the world of senior military officers, Communist Party members, and the countrys ruling elite. They enjoy a lavish lifestyle, fancy restaurants, diplomatic shops with European foods, nightclubs, even a casino.
The world for ordinary people in North Korea is completely different. In their world, one can see young children, undersized, undernourished, mute, with sunken eyes and skin stretched tight across their faces, wearing uniform blue-and-white-striped pajamas. Anyone whos seen pictures of Dachau or Auschwitz would find the scene distressingly familiar. Remember all animals are equal. It's just that some animals are more equal than others.

China's motives are not transparent. It can always be trusted to screw everyone in pursuit of self interest
China wants to minimize Korea's influence in Asia. South Korea is an economic dynamo. A unification with the population of North Korea would strengthen Korea and bring about separatist movements from the 60+ million ethnic Koreans in China.

Not much we can do. When Carter and Clinton agreed to provide fuel and food under their sellout in '94, everything went to the NK Army, the average citizen got nothing. And the regime went right on working on nukes.
As big a mess as East Germany was before reunification, I don't even want to think about how big the job is going to be to clean up and reintegrate the Korean peninsula once the commies do fall. Of course, that's assuming China will let it happen. If they sense Kim Jong Il is about to fall, they may invade and take over themselves. They do not want a unified, democratic Korea right on their border.
