Wireless in the field doesn't affect the office! In the field, they still have to connect to the Internet and then VPN or something into the office. The office server doesn't care how the remote computer is connected - wired or wireless.

Wireless internet access? or wireless networking? (or both).

I was just checking your thread b/c I'm trying to learn about this same topic, not b/c I had any answers, sorry I can't be of more help.

I know with wireless networking in your office, you need to be careful about using a relatively secure system, so that someone with a laptop in a car can't get on your network and look through the files on your network. I think that most wireless networking equipment has this stuff built in these days, just need to be sure it's on. Good luck.

A local area network wireless network has a very small range, probably several hundred feet at best. Consider how close strangers can get to your physical location. If they can get within the range of your wireless broadcast, they could hack into your network. Always use 802.1x encryption to prevent this. Do a google search to find out more about 802.1x. You could instead use WEP (wired equivalent privacy), but it is not as secure as 802.1x.

If your network also has a wired Internet connection you could possible get a cellular type wireless connection for the laptops in the field. This will be at a considerable extra cost. Note that in any case your laptops in the field will not be able to directly talk to you LAN wireless network unless they're right by it physically.

Hope this helps.

Visit your local Sprint or Verizion store. I read that Verizion is testing a system (mobil high speed web access) for S.E. Michigan and I'm sure other markets are in the works.

Rod : Check out the website of LinkSys. They have an excellent tutorial on their homepage titled "EDUCATE ME". Security is always a concern but, rest easy, they will guide you thru this stuff.
All the major work has been done and is waiting for you. Good luck.
Go to LinkSys.com or "google'" thru "PC networking sources".

Most laptops sold in the last few years have built in wireless capability. Before investing in some type of regional wireless service for office access, I would send my field people to free wireless hotspots to get e-mail, communicate with the office etc.

Many coffee shops, restaurants, hotels/motels and even some public libraries provide free wireless access to the Internet. There are web sites that list these hotspots and many of these places advertise their wireless access.
