If our founding fathers were deists, they weren't very strong ones. They attended church services, granted permission for gov't buildings to be used as churches, read the Bible, prayed, believed in heaven and hell, and much of their writing indicates they believed God does have a somewhat active role in worldy affairs. These are all things that are contrary to deist beliefs.

All of which are perfectly in agreement with an evolving Deism, as well as Christianity.

Deists are to Christians as Conservatives are to Republicans.

George Washington never stepped inside the church. He took his wife to church on Sundays and remained in the carriage while she attended services. Some of the others who weren't Christian attended religious services as a social function. Not all Deists avoided church services like Washington and Paine. Even today, many Deists and Unitarians attend Christian services.
