Military service above and beyond the call of duty does not a statesman make, no matter how many people vote for you, no matter how often.

Statesmanship is about character, diplomacy and principled behavior. Nothing about what McPain did yesterday exemplifies any of those attributes in any measurable degree. All he has demonstrated is that his core principle is compromise.

Make no mistake, I laud his military service, I salute his personal sacrifices for this country, and I commend his carriage while in the military as exemplary to armed services personnel of these United States in every branch of military service.

However, I WILL NOT -- I cannot -- make equivalent statements regarding McCain's time in political office. After yesterday's fiasco, McCain needs to be packed off to Lesiure World.

There are 55 Senators who are Republicans or at least claim to be. Seven signed on to the "Deal"; that leaves 48 who did not do so.

If in the future, "extraordinary circumstances" arise in the minds of 41 DemocRAT senators so as to justify a filibuster of a judicial nominee, including one to the Supreme Court, then, I presume, Frist could start the ball rolling toward the Constitutional Option once again.

Here is the key -- Frist would have to have all of the votes of the Republican 48 Senators who were not part of the Deal, PLUS at least two of the Dirty 7 who were in on the Deal in order to rule the filibuster illegal. Otherwise, the Constitutional Option fails and this is a huge victory for the Rats.

To me, it is certain that the Deal will NOT prevent a future filibuster-- it will happen as soon as NARAL et al say it should happen. The only question is whether the Pub's can stop it when it does happen.

I imagine I'll get pinged if something happens. I had to turn off CSpan, the global warming discussion was putting me to sleep.

Bill Frist has proven that today! I apologize for doubting him a month or so ago!

I may be in the minority in my gut feeling but here goes....

It still only takes 51 votes to pass a nominee out of the Sentate to a judgeship. Correct?

The 60 vote requirement is for cloture to end a filibuster, right? So if 7 Democrats are "out of play" and have promised to vote for cloture, this leaves only 38 Democrats to filibuster and this would be 2 less than needed.

Trusting the 7 Democrats to uphold their end of this bargain may be a stretch, but in the meantime we get at least 3 judges that were "controversial" and a good bet to get the other 4 voted up or down. Also any future judges Bush sends up will not be filibustered without "extreme circumstances".

If a filibuster occurs, the deal is off. Is this the gist of the agreement?

Hello,

Weird thing is that I met McCain in Scottsdale, AZ in (I think) 1981. My parents were big on conservative pols and dragged me to lots of meetings. They both thought the world of him, and supported him as much as possible. (Of course, my memory is somewhat vague as I was 16 years old and much more interested in boys.)

Since then, he has taken a turn for the "look at me, MSM, please put me on camera, any camera" dark side.

Glad to be here, MOgirl

Bork said that the Dems call normal, GOOD people " extremists", but that it is the Dems who are the EXTREMISTS and he's correct. :-)
