Let's fact the facts - millons of kids nowadays look like Jabba the Hut. Why? Because they do not exercise at all!

If these fatso had taken gym, instead of chorus, perhaps they would not now look like small houses with feet.

This impudent young lady should have dropped chorus and taken gym.

She's varsity in 3 sports. She doesn't need a gym class.

This impudent school district should have dropped gym than waste the taxpayers dollars. Kids look like Michael Moore despite all the money and time wasted on gym.

The young lady had played three sports at the varsity level. She likely didn't need gym to learn how to be in good physical condition. Furthermore, many high school gym classes are taught by brain-dead coaches who know nothing about teachng kids how to make healthy choices and adopt healthy lifestyles. The reality is that gym has done no more to teach kids healthy physical lives than condom-based sex ed has taught them to have healthy sexual lives. Both are examples of government failure. It's sad to think that there are Freepers who can't understand these facts. I thought we were better than this.

My USF bound senior in high School was the league MVP in football. He played basketball on a team that won a state championship this year. He's been all league three years on a baseball team that has won a sectional championship one year, lost in the sectional finals last year, and has a great shot at winning another sectional title this year.

He's in the weight room before most kids wake up. Oh, BTW, he has a 4.25 GPA. Fortunately his school never insisted that he take a worthless P.E. class over the honors math classes he's taken....

since she has three letters, it is doubtful that she lacks physical activity, or is fat either.

stupid rules made by stupid people for stupid kids who are destined for failure.

smart kids and parents circumventing the system learn valuable lessons, primarily that success comes from circumventing the system... getting above the fray and staying there by whatever means necessary.

playing by rules that are patently stupid, under threat of force, is the socialist's key to maintaining perpetual mediocrity. This entire nation is ready to revolt against the socialist bureacracy on so many levels, it should be of concern to the 'we must have more rules' idiots running the asylums. But because they are stupid, they wont' figure it out till their school district is closed for lack of students and operating funds.

As fare as the girl's socialist phys ed requirement, she probably missed the phys ed/health class where they taught bananas and condoms 101...

kudos to this 'rebel' varsity sports, magna cum.... whatever. Welcome to trinity college.

"Let's fact the facts - millons of kids nowadays look like Jabba the Hut. Why? Because they do not exercise at all!"

What three sports did Jabba the Hut participate in?

1. Tug of War
2. Hockey (He played goalie)
3. Football (Offensive Line)

Somehow I'm willing to bet the three sports this young lady lettered in were somewhat more athletic.

It is NOT the school's business to determine if a student is fat. This story does not say she is overwight anyway. In fact, she lettered in 3 different sports. I don't think she is fat doing that.

Where's your evidence that this is the case? From what I've seen, physical education class participation doesn't seem to prevent obesity. Do you have actual data to contradict that or are you trolling?

Though Isabel Gottlieb is a good student, a trumpet player in the school band and holds varsity letters in three sports, she discovered last fall she was one gym class shy of having enough credits to graduate next month.

Why should she have dropped chorus and taken one semester of gym class when the article itself states she holds varsity letters in three sports. Do you think there's no discipline in achieving varsity letters in one sport much less three? You infer she's a fatso, please let me know what sports she could hold varsity letters in that would make her look like Jabba the Hut? Do you really think there's no discipline, no excercise, no thinking on one's feet in order to become lettered?

About the only skill learned in the school's mandatory program is CPR. She's already shown leadership, Now, assuming she hasn't taken any CPR classes, why couldn't the school have her take an extracurricular class taught by professionals on CPR?

I regret the school system is so rigid they'll prevent her from graduating from high school. Thank goodness the college she's selected isn't so full of itself that it would turn away a student who from all reports is interested in learning and has the discipline to take the courses she did take.

Ah, but see, we must always follow the rules even if there maybe a way to compromise.

With the initiative this young woman has shown, I'd be more than happy to have her as one of my employees.

Oh dear, she's going to miss out on the realities of drug and alcohol education and human sexuality. She's a senior, right? I was in high school 34 years ago and I'm not a drug addict, an alcoholic or sexually promiscuous. I suppose I was one of the few lucky ones who didn't end up in the gutter because I didn't have access to these classes.

One of the other semesters, students will begin the college planning process, with emphasis on the application process, essay and resume writing, and school selection. Well, it sounds as if she's already handled this part of her education on her own since she's been accepted into college provided she takes the GED or has her high school diploma. Only the red tape encrusted high school administrators are preventing her from getting her high school diploma.

I'm sure this program can help some of the kids who take it because it can teach them some critical life skills as well as motivate them. The problem is, the young lady in question has gone out and learned those skills on her own and so therefore must be penalized by being denied her high school graduation.

The missing credit wasn't caught by the school last spring when Gottlieb's schedule was set.

Who initially messed up? Was it Miss Gottlieb? Nope, the school didn't catch the error when her schedule was set. So the school compounds the problem by prohibiting her from graduating with her high school class. Oh, I know...Gottlieb added the class last year after the school told her she had to take it, but then she dropped it when she found out it was too much on top of classes she was already taking, including two Advanced Placement classes and calculus. Better for her to drop one of her other approved classes like band, chorus, AP biology or calculus.

After all, what benefit does she gain out of any of those 4 classes? Of course, Miss Gottlieb could have continued taking the class (which she added last year) but it's no big deal if the heavy load impacts the rest of her classes. As long as she takes the one semester overlooked and then required in order to get her high school diploma, who cares what impact that heavy load may have on her ability to get into college. Just as long as she follows the rules, she'll be making the 'right' decision and that's always what counts, right?

I wonder what 3 varsity letters she managed to earn if she ended up not looking like Jabba the Hut.

Never had a speeding ticket? Or never went over the limit but didn't get caught? Never, ever spent money that might have been spent better elsewhere? Never bought an item of clothing and then decided you didn't want/like it? Ever bought a plant marked to be planted in full sun and you planted it in partial sun? You've obeyed every rule and every law? Oh and ignorance of the law is no excuse. Never felt envy, jealousy, coveted, hate even if for a moment?

Congratulations, you're the first person I've ever met who was perfect. Funny, I thought there was only one perfect human and he died for our sins quite awhile ago.

What I'm trying to point out to you is you're judging this woman based upon your past experiences. Maybe you did know someone who'd been better off taking gym and not singing in the choir. Maybe you have a fat child you're feeling particularly exasperated about. You don't know Miss Gottlieb except for the information contained in the article and yet you've already determined she needed to take gym in lieu of choir and that her failure to do so made her impudent.

I bet it tears you up that she's already taken the practice test for her GED and once she hears back on that, she'll schedule a time to take the official version.
