LIVE THREAD: Dan Rather's Last Broadcasts
www.freerepublic.com | March 9, 2005 | Free Republic

Dan Rather enters the CBS broadcast center for his last scheduled broadcast of the 'CBS Evening News' March 9, 2005 in New York. Tributes to the 73-year-old newsman were mixed with sniping after his final months were marred by a reporting scandal that tarnished his reputation. REUTERS/Chip East

Yeah, I mistook month 09 for August, I should have typed "story filed September 23, 2004." Still, note that it puts Rather's retirement in 2006, at a 25 year milstone.

"Actually, I find it odd that Rush was inundated with angry e-mails the first day he aired these "watermarks". Must be the same people who don't like his paper-crackling."

I heard Rush say that people were upset that he used "watermarks" during an audio clip of President Bush, but I didn't realize folks were miffed about their use at other times.

I guess it's a 'schitck' my husband would find less than amusing after the first couple of times.

I find it hilarious. "Cuckoo" "Helllooo" "Yearghh!"

Best to you Nutmeg. Spring is just around the corner.....hopefully soon!

I can't wait to get out and dig around the garden.

As long as the dish is securely fastened down, shouldn't be a problem! Mine is secured on the roof of the house just below the attic overhang, so it's sheltered from the wind, but out far enough the entire dish surface can "see" the satellite. :)

Just be sure you don't have trees close to the south side of your house, or you'll lose the signal when the leaves grow back and won't have a picture until Fall when the leaves fall. LOL!

Proof enough?

Ok, Gulf. So what you are saying that in the middle of the media storm that Rather was in, in "November 24, 2004", which is the date on the story you linked that you are taking this particular paragraph at the absolute face value truth?

"Discussions with CBS management about when he would leave began in 1999, were shelved after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and then renewed last summer, Rather said. He said he and Moonves agreed his departure would be sometime early next year and Rather settled on March 9 — the 24th anniversary of when he succeeded Cronkite.

So, Rather is saying, 2 months AFTER the ANG story aired that he and Moonves agreed about his departure. Sure. I believe that!

If you think that Rather lies about everything else, why are you willing to take this at face value?

Well, I missed it; I just got in. I had a previously arranged engagement after work tonight and will have to catch the rerun via Chris Matthews comments after scrolling through this Thread.

Courage, eh. *LOL*

Gotta say that Common Tator's posts on this thread are the best take: today's show is great for the short term memory, but behind it all, Rather is toast.

But Les Moonves gives a less than clear statement, that can fairly be read either way:

CBS chief Les Moonves, says that Dan Rather might have stuck around behind the anchor desk for a 25th year, had the newsman not been at the center of "Memogate" last fall.

"Maybe, but he made the choice [to step down]," Moonves told the latest edition of Playboy magazine about the possibility or Rather spending another year at "The CBS Evening News."

"It was important that he do this ahead of the report [of the investigation into the scandal]," says Moonves.

"Yes, he may have announced his retirement a month earlier than he would otherwise have in order to distance the announcement from the report, there's no question about that, but he had already planned to retire."

New Your Post - March 2, 2005

I believe that Rather changed his retirement intentions after getting caught pushing and defending the forged Killian memos. He's been caught in a lie before, so bailing early on this one is out of form with his past conduct. That makes me think he is covering something more important.

LOL... just noticed your tagline... I love Rush's "watermarks"! ;-D

'Course I'm strange... I like his "paper-crackling", too...

LOL! Me too! I even like it when he finishes reading a stupid article and you can hear him tear it and ball it up and toss it in the wastebasket. LOL

His tapping fingers on the desk don't bother me either. LOL

Speaking of Rush. Missed his show today, so I'm going to catch the "repeat" on KFBK in Sacramento at 10:00pm PT. :D

I spent the day today at the ear doctor, getting another hearing exam, looks like the hearing has improved in both ears, so the cochlear implant operation has been cancelled (for now at least). So I am going back in 2 weeks to be fitted with the Cadillac of hearing aids. ($2145 for one) To be put into the ear that was supposed to be the candidate for the implant. It'll be like having the newest desktop computer on the neighborhood block. There will be so many geeky things on the hearing aid, the doctor said he'd have to show me how to use it. LOL!!

My prayers have been answered!!

My doctor said he wants to put me on a hearing aid for now, because once I get the cochlear implant, there's no turning back. This measure of course will be non-invasive, and will have a 2 month guarantee, so if I feel it's not helping I can get a full return refund. :)

This will be out of pocket and completely wipe out my savings account. Medicaid won't even pay for it.

You wanted proof.

I gave you proof.

FOX and other sources reported his retirement
was made BEFORE the Texas National Guard Story.

Ask them, not me.

I don't believe any of them, anymore.

"But Les Moonves gives a less than clear statement, that can fairly be read either way:"

Well, actually, it's humorous that we are even discussing this from a 'Les Moonves' perspective. Because if this was Dan Rather's "planned retirement" one would think, there would be a succession plan. Even if ole Dan didn't have it in him to find a replacement, it was Moonves job to do so. He didn't thus we have......abrupt retirement.

Glad I'm not a Viacom stockholder, myself.

Yeah, I didn't really like it so much during Pres. Bush's speech, but find it funny any other time. When Rush first started airing the watermarks (on clips before Pres. Bush's), he said he was being inundated with e-mails from listeners saying "Cut it out.. the watermarks are driving me nuts!"

I can't wait to get out and dig around the garden.

Best to you, too. I see you're in Minnesota... I suspect you've had a tougher winter than we've had here in Connecticut. :o)

I'm looking forward to getting out in the garden also. Won't see any greenery around here until mid-to-late April...

You have to read what is written. FOX reported WHAT DAN RATHER SAID. And you took that to be the truth.

And the story was written, well after the ANG story. If you can find a story that proves that Rather was planning to retire on March 9, 2005 that was published before the Sept 8, 2004 ANG story, it would prove your point.

The timeline is crucial......for many of these stories.

The Viacom "empire" is so huge, that Viacom would probably benefit in the long run if CBS completely dumped the evening news altogether. Network news departments are so small to these huge media organizations, they are practically irrelevant to the overall bottom line of the company, yet they tend to bring the sentiment of the shareholders down by continuing to showcase Liberal bias in the newsroom.

Funny off topic story though: I lurk and post in the Echostar usenet newsgroups, and there was this one poster who wanted Echostar to come out and chop down a tree blocking the south facing view. Someone simply suggested getting an axe and saving the time, trouble, and money, and do-it-yourself. LOL

The guy was plumb lazy! LOL!

None that said what you claimed. Unless you believe Dan Rather. And I thought that was the point of the large and bold font interruption of this thread.

can you post over here what you posted on the video thread?

This?

"It was amazing Thursday to watch the documents story go from FreeRepublic.com, a bastion of right-wing lunacy, to Drudge to the mainstream media in less than 12 hours," said Jim Jordan, a strategist for independent Democratic groups opposed to Bush, and Kerry's former campaign manager.

"That's not to say the documents didn't deserve examination."But apparently the entire thing was cooked up by a couple of amateurs on Free Republic. The speed with which it moved was breathtaking.”

. ****

Can't get enough of that sweet one. ;-)

****

Sorry I'm so late getting back to you, I had an ill neighbor to see.
