The 747 is what you get when you tell the B-52 design team to make a big airliner.
I'm pretty sure that an Airbus equivalent wouldn't fare nearly as well with one engine out.

The blame can't be put on Boeing, Boeing basically designs the airframe.
If there is any blame to go around, it would be with the maintenance crew who worked on that plane, or the company who design the engines.
Boeing may give the jet engine companies the specifications to the engines, but, it's the jet engine companies who build them.
Boeing does not build the engines, Pratt&Whitney/G&E/and ROLLS ROYCE-British Company ) which builds engines for Boeing and Airbus.
