We hear lots about "ultraconservatives," "extreme conservatives," "far right" nominees, etc... When is the last time someone was labelled "ultra liberal," "extreme leftist," etc... by the MSM?

I had never heard the term "neo-con" before 2000. Can't make it through the day without hearing it now.

Neoconservatives named *themselves* back in the late 70s, early 80s, to distinguish themselves from old-fashioned conservatives. They wore it as a badge of honor, because they were a lot smarter than us old-fashioned conservatives who actually believed in smaller government, and who, while we believed in having a strong defense so you didn't have to fight, also believed in staying out of war -- the ultimate big-government program.

The reason that you hear the term so much now is that neoconservatives have basically carried the day when it comes to foreign policy (the more wars and foreign military interventions the better), and when it comes to big government (the bigger the better -- as long as neoconservatives are peopling the bureaucracies.)
